Dave Williams Chanter - Sound File Enclosed

Recently (today) I reeded my friend’s Williams chanter. He is a bit on the lucky side. He got the chanter for under $60 in a garage sale. …a true story, so it is!

Now, I’ve been told that Williams’ chanters varied..some of them great and some not so great. I know not a thing about his instruments except this particular 4-keyed beauty and this one is class!

This file is of the brand new reed. After I got the reed to length, I stuck it in and made this file. I thought the readers. (especially those who’ve read about Dave’s work, but have never heard it.) might appreciate how sweetly this chanter allows the reed to speak. (indeedy, another one made from Joseph Sampson’s Cali. cane). I played these tunes more or less legato to show of the sweetness of the sound.

Enjoy…

Thanks very much. That is the sweet sound that I look for.

That chanter & reed combination certainly sounds very sweet.

What are you recording with (mic and software)?

thanks PJ & Ed!

recording software:

I use what some mastering engineers (and recording engineers) would call a world class pre amp. It ihas been the best investment in audio recording gear I have made up to this date. It is fully upgradeable and records very transparently. Not only is the hardware excellent, the software is equally astonishing and flexible (read more: http://www.mhsecure.com/v5mm/ULN2_2dExpanded.html).

I used an AKG 414 from about 2ft away and recorded directly into Ableton Live.

Ed thanks for that I can now increase the price of ma Williams Chanter frae £3k to £3.5K with offers o’er £4 K considered.Whit a bargain ye will get :pint:

Happy Bidding ye all

…got a sound clip?

MP file… how do I host it?

got to www.box.net

You could post it on the other forum and set up a link.

Gorgeous!!! That’s my favorite chanter sound, right there. I’m so glad this one found an appreciative home.

And I think I want to go to garage sales with your friend.

Excellent sounding reed!!! WoW! Tons of tone. Williams (RIP) certainly must have known very well what he was doing. If I ever get my hands on a Williams’ chanter (sorry Uilliam, £4 K is a bit out of my price range  ), it’s good to know of someone in the US who could reed it well..

Keep up the good work K. Pádraig!
All the best,

Mr. Bigley is apparently making Williams inspired chanters.

Thanks Brazenkine I have been fiddling awa here ,computers are quite amazing things really.
So here it is with one of ma own reeds in it…now then I am not a reedmaker as such so some of the notes may be bit awry but by and large they tend to drift in the right direction of #/ b except C# which is playing #instead of b(flat) and middle D which is flat…anyways enough of the excuses…

I will try a proper reed in it later

Evertjan t’ Hart is also making Williams inspired sets. There are a coupla shots of his boxwood set on his band’s webpage. Nice looking pipes:

Also has that tone that is not overly nasal or attack heavy. Really nice.

3rd one down is one of my reeds.Iam happy to learn that it works fairly well in a Willaim’s stick.Cool!

The good thing aboot this sample is that all three reedmakers did not have access to the chanter when they made the reeds and did not know whit chanter it was for.The results are as ye heard and are good given they were distance made.Well done fellas.
Live long and prosper…
