cylindrical chanters

hi all, i play jig and reels on the low D, i learn by ear. and i love the sound of uilleann pipes aswell.
i want to learn them, and i’ll give it everything.

at least i have a few things straight now:

-i’ll buy a practice set in D

-the chanter has to be cylindrical, i can’t handle conical chanters.

i know david daye makes these. are there any other makers who do this? i’d like to compare sounds.

Why is this ??

hi tony,

it’s in the chape. conical chanters give me tension, cylindrical chanters feel natural for me

It sounds like you’re creating an unnecessary mental obstical. Try borrowing a practice set… give it a day or two to adapt.

You could buy a conical chanter and wrap electrical tape around it. Or superglue ebony dust to build up the outside. Or you could fit a brass tube on the outside and build little chimneys to connect to the fingerholes.

i looked around on the internet, the only places to hire them are in americay, and i live in belgium at the moment.
i’ll buy a david day practice set.

thanks for your help anyway

Kevin, play nice.

Lixnaw, the reference to conical and cylindrical are about the inside of the chanter, i.e. the bore. All uilleann pipe chanters have a conical bore. The shape of the outside can be anything you like, although different pipemakers do have their preferences, i.e. some are squared, some are thin, some are flared, etc.

Hope that helps,

djm

lixnaw, I got your PM.

Purchasing a Daye penny chanter is a good first instrument.
Don’t be afraid to consider a used traditional wooden chanter.

thanks for all the info
