since i can play a few jigs and reels on the low D, (i learn by ear), i feel ready for the uilleann pipes. it will be another two years practicing on the whistles anyway, before i get a kirk lynch practice set. or would there be other makers who make sets that are very similar to kirk lynch’s in sound?
i have something with hole spacing wich is hard to explain. i have only 1 hole spacing in mind for the top hand, wich feel comfortable for me: from the top of the top hole to the end of the bottom hole:2 inches/ 3 quarters
wich chanter would i have to look for and what boresize would they be?
If you are worried about hand size needed to play pipes and you can handle a Low D whistle, consider this:
-
Teenage kids who study pipes usually play on wide bore D chanters.
-
Varances in hole spacing from maker to maker aren’t that much… probably less than 1/4"
The reddish colored chanter pictured below measures 2 3/4" from the top of the fisrt hole to the bottom of the third hole.

Try to find a piper (or better yet pipemaker) near you to try things out first.
thanks a million tony!!
i own you one! this is low G spacing. the thing with me is: i can play a high D whistle, a low G whistle and a low D whistle, but nothing in between.
i know the fingering is different and i have to use my pinky finger, but i can manage that with the pipes.
i just gave marc van daal a ring and his wife told me he’s the only one that can play his pipes. he even hasn’t a spare chanter, except for the one he’s working on.
could you please tell me what key this chanter is in? and what other keys i can play it?
The top chanter is ebony by Gallagher in C
The second chanter is boxwood by Wooff in narrow bore D
The third chanter is red lancewood by Simack in wide bore D
The forth chanter is blackwood by Childress in wide bore D
thanks tony,
i take your advice and give it a try first at arie keyzer’s before i order.
