Crow note?

I’m trying to make some reeds using the “Heart” as a guide as well as other written materials. What “crow note” am I aiming for? I think I’ve read G#. What if it’s higher, like B does that mean more sanding & scraping, or has it gone too far? Likewise, if its lower like E, what does that mean–more sanding/scraping or start over? Or does it have to do with how open the lips are? Thanks!!

If I recall correctly - according to Geoff Woff on the fantastic NPU DVD, you aim for the first fundamental - or A for a D chanter

Actually, its a G for a D reed - that’s for the soft crow, i.e. pulling softly on the reed to just barely get the crow.

If you get a squeak at all you’'re on the right road.
Don’t mind what pitch it is until you put it in to the chanter. Test the tuning then!
