I don’t often make Commercial Posts on the forums, even though this project has permission from C&F founder Dale Wisely, and current moderators.
As there seem to be a lot of new members on the C&F forums who may not be aware of these CDs, I’m making a special offer to promote them through the end of the year. While primarily of interest to Irish flute players, they may also appeal to whistle players, and other lovers of Irish Traditional music.

Each volume is a 2-CD set of primarily Irish solo flute recordings, put out as a fundraiser for a U.S. non-profit organization (Federal & California tax-exempt). The educational and entertaining CDs utilise world-class flute players to sample the variety of repertoire, regional styles, and individual expressive techniques of tempo, tone, articulation, and phrasing. In many instances, key clicks and breaths are clearly discernible.
Performers are “nominated” by their musical peers, and “elected” by an Internet community of enthusiasts. The aim is to facilitate a “player’s choice” atmosphere. Tracks are performed on wooden keyed and keyless flutes - antiques and modern instruments. Tune selection and permissions come from the flute players themselves, and any involved composers.
Volume 1 introduced the concept primarily with existing tracks, while Volumes 2 & 3 became more of a recording project, adding 59 recordings, new for these CDs, along with extant material. Lists of the participating artists, accompanists, tune titles, etc. can be found at the organization website at http://www.worldtrad.org/ . All labor except for mastering, graphics & actual replication is volunteer effort.
"What we get to hear is something of the current state of Irish traditional flute playing, in its international context, from widely recorded commercial virtuosos, to talented enthusiasts, many of whom were invited to record specifically for Wooden Flute Obsession, and may or may not ever record again.
The era of the 78-rpm disc captured a brief moment in the history of Irish traditional music utilising the cutting edge technology of its time. The Wooden Flute Obsession series opens a similar window for us almost 100 years later." - Hammy Hamilton, 2004 (flute maker, player, & ethnomusicologist)
