Copley vs Reviol?

Hey everybody,

Just curious if anybody has any experience with a Copley and a Reviol and would care to comment on his or her experience. In particular, I’d be interested in a comparison between a keyed Copley vs a keyed Reviol.

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Michael,

I’ve played many of both. No bad choice here. They are both sort of “hybrid” flutes not being “strict” copies of any particular model but embracing the best virtues of both Rudalls and Prattens.

Either maker will sell you a keyless and key it later (Maurice adds the keys and Dave gives you a new, keyed body)

Copley does block-mounted keys and Maurice’s are post mounted. Again, no bad choice. I’m personally partial to the fexibility of post mounted keywork.

They both play extremely well. Dave will be closer if you ever have a problem in the US.

Maurice works in several unique looking timbers if you want one that isn’t black.

The Reviols may be a titch more “Rudall-y” than the Copley meaning a bit sweeter and warmer but either flute would be fully cabable of expressing anything from warm and sweet to rough and reedy in the right hands.

Doc

Doc,

Thank you for the comparison. It was just along the lines of what I hoped someone would provide. As always, you’re thorough and insightful.

Much obliged,

Michael

I’ve had both makers’ flutes. As Doc says, you can’t go wrong with either one. Reviol doesn’t get the U.S. exposure he deserves because he’s now in New Zealand. His key work is stunning and his flutes have a strong tone. When he was in Dingle, a number of good Irish players used his flutes.
