I’ve been experimenting with different whistles, and one constant has been that I definitely like the sound, feel, and look of the conical clarke-style whistles better than the cylindrical generation style. I have three regular clarkes, a sweetone (don’t like that one quite as much), and Jerry-tweaked shaw. Copelands I’m sure are wonderful but are wayway out of my price range for a whistle. Are there any other conical whistles I should know about, or is my collection actually (more or less) complete?
On a side note, is there anywhere to buy the untweaked shaws in the US, or do I have to order from the UK? Don’t get me wrong, I love the one I have from Jerry Freeman, but I’d also like to try a Bb and a low D, and my understanding is Jerry doesn’t tweak those. TIA…
If you go on the main Chiff and Fipple site and then go to “Guide to buying whistles on the Internet” you’ll find quite a few U.S. based stores that sell Shaws. I’m very happy with both of mine (A and E, not tweaked). Good luck and enjoy!
Thanks for the replies…I checked out the other whistles mentioned, but I’m not really interested in getting a wooden one right now. Actually, its kind of a relief, I’ll just get a couple more shaws, and then my WHOA is cured! Well, except I want to get a laughing whistle (strictly for the convenience of travel (oh alright, and because its cute and I liked the sound clips)) and a Jerry-tweaked generation…but then I’m cutting down, really I am! Thanks also for pointing out where to get the other shaws…can’t believe I didn’t check the links…well, back to practicing…
