Very good stuff. I’m again heartened to know that ITM, especially played on the flute has a secure future. Kevin: Perhaps this lass could find a slot on a future WFO CD?

I second that, Kevin. There seem to be a few very talented young players about.
McAuliffe maintains a wonderful tone thru the whole thing ~ great playing ![]()

Beautiful Crans…and it looks like she has really small hands. Wonderful playing all around.
I’ve seen Orla play a few times. The first time she wasn’t much bigger than the flute she was playing. Stunning playing for any age but amazing for a player so young. At that time I think it was the u12 all Ireland she held. This year she moved up to the u15 I think, so I guess she would have been 13, and won. I hope she will record an Album before long.

That’s awesome. I love her playing. Thanks for the link

I met Orlaith at Hammy’s Flute Meeting just over a year ago. I think she was thirteen or fourteen then. Super lass - very quiet, shy seeming teenager (studious note-taker!) till asked to perform, then all the confidence and panache in the world. She ran through that Moving Cloud rendition in J-MV’s tutorial when he got us each to play a piece for him. Blew us all away and Jean-Michel said he really had nothing to say (in terms of constructive criticism such as he offered the rest of us, that is)! What a future this lass should have, especially when she matures and moves away from the competition test-piece approach. In her case it has obviously suited and motivated her, though it doesn’t work that way for everyone, and you really can’t argue with the result! I’ll second the motion to get her on Kevin’s next collection.
Jemtheflute,
You mention a Jean-Michel tutorial. I didn’t know he has one published? Or, was it just something he put together for that workshop?
I’d love to know more about it! I attended Boxwood last year where he was one of the teachers. Truly an amazing player and a good teacher!

Oh no, not another transatlantic linguistic conundrum. Sorry Jeanie, no joy! I used ‘tutorial’ in its British (university) sense of an in-depth, small group, specialist teaching session with a tutor. (Clear in the context, actually.) I wouldn’t use that term to refer to a ‘tutor’ book. S’pose I should have said ‘workshop’. Alas, brilliant musician, great teacher & thoroughly nice guy that Jean-Michel is, I doubt writing a guide like that would be his kind of thing. Be great if he did, though!
