I’ve been bringing a regular acoustic to session, but I really don’t like the feel nearly as much as a classical guitar. I play fingerpick style, and while fun on the acoustic, I get more satisfaction playing that way on a classical. Would I catch a bunch of flak for bringing a classical guitar? There’s also the obvious issue of it not being loud enough, but as long as I can hear myself play I wouldn’t mind too much.
Actually, I guess they are getting popular. I used to play with a flamenco guitar player. Also, on kerrywhistles.com, there’s a movie in the cinema section where there’s a classical guitar accompanying. I don’t like the style this particular player uses, but it’s classical all the same. Flamenco rythyms are great with Irish music too, with the golpe. I actually think it might have been the Sharen Shannon concert on kerrywhistles.com, but I forget exactly. Maybe check it out… I say, why not?

If it was sharon shannon , it was probably Jim Murray. He pays a nylon string guitar.
He replaced Steve Cooney from ‘Seamus Begley and Stev Cooney’ ,Cooney also played nylon string guitar.
Both sound great.
Id say go for it, why not!
There is a classical guitar player at the local slow session. I think that it sounds nice, especially on the sparse days. You can always try, I’m sure that if someone doesn’t like it, they will let you know. Musicians tend to be blunt. ![]()
Tim Edey (played on Lunasa’s Se) plays nylon string. I think Ian Stephenson may, he plays with Kathryn Tickell. Donogh Hennessy uses nylon sometimes. I think Donal Clancy uses them at times also.
I use a takamine acoustic/electric classical guitar. Sometimes I play fingerstyle and sometimes with a pick. I think it has a nice sound for the music. Hey, why not bring both! I did this clip with the takamine and a dixon flute that I used to love, but now hate since i found out what a “real” flute plays and sounds like. I record with sony Acid on a crappy PC.

Well that’s certainly encouraging! I’ll bring it next session and see how it goes. I think as long as I don’t play when the harp is playing, I’ll be ok.
