Clare Whistles

In my ongoing quest to acquire every cheapie, I just got a Clare two-piece. I haven’t really heard much about them here, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but it is awesome.

IMO it is the best untweaked cheapie I have played (not that I have played them all yet.)

Just wondering why I haven’t heard more about them when they are this good.

I’ve written about them occasionally.
I’m a fan of them, too.

Oh, I really want one. Where did you get yours? For some reason, I thought that it wasn’t made anymore.

I have a 2 piece Clare. I like the sound. I only have one fussy thing to mention. After taking it apart and putting it back together so many times, the two pieces didn’t seal well and it got all chiffy. I used teflon tape for awhile but once you take the whistle apart, the teflon tape wasn’t so reusable again. Always having access to teflon tape didn’t work out either. I then got some latex tubing to cover the joint. That sealed things well but it’s a bit difficult to get on the first time and then to roll back to separate the pieces. The joint is a bit loose and the latex keeps it snug but the whistle looks a bit bent.

I would certainly agree. Of all the cheaper priced whistles, this, IMO is one of the best. Be sure to check the fipple for stray pieces of plastic.

And if you really want to hear a great whistle, put a Hoover Black Top on that tube. It’s fantastic!!!

I once bought a single piece clare whistle from The Whistle Shop maybe 4 years ago, and I didn’t think very highly of it, it was playable, but I liked my Gens and Feadogs more. That’s my only experience with a Clare whistle.

Truckloads of Clare’s can be had here:

I have a Hoover White Cap on my one piece Clare. It certainly is one of my favorites especially when I don’t want to disturb anyone in the evening.

You can also get them at lollysmith.com
They are a little more expensive than other cheapies, but worth every penny.

Put some double sided scotch tape on it. Then put the teflon on the tape. The double tape will hold the teflon and let it slide together.

I have a two piece Clare - I believe it was referred to as the “Eagle” model - splits pretty far down the tube (about one-third-two thirds) and has a really light lime green mouthpiece. It’s a pretty nice whistle but I have other favorite cheapies that I’d stack up against any whistles in the same respective keys.

  • The now legendary and no longer made Walton Golden Tone C - I have one with a yellow and one with a green mouthpiece - both extraordinary. I liked one that I tried so much I called Walton (upstate NY, I believe) and asked them to send me all that they had left - 4 whistles; I gifted 2 and kept 2. That was some years ago.

  • Generation Bflat - I have one nickel blue top and one brass red top and both are also great whistles.

My old Clarke D and C whistles are also really good as is my very old Susato D/C/Bflat set.

I appreciate these threads because it gets me to go through my jars of old cheapies, which is amazing fun.

A one-piece Clare was my first whistle and I still play it-dented tube, cracked fipple and all.

As far as cheapies go, I do like my Clarke original better.

Well, I like Clarke original’s sound a little more, but it isn’t all that fun to play. I have to breath twice as much as with any other whistle I own.
So, next in my quest might have to be a tweaked Clarke so it takes less air.

Next time I’m fussing, I’ll do that. I have double-sided tape too.
