Cillian Low D vs. Copeland

Can anyone comment on this? If you had your druthers, which would you get? Aside from the legend surrounding the Copeland (well deserved, I’m sure, from what I’ve read), Cillian is also well respected, in many areas.

I don’t like the Cillian low D’s. The sound doesnt have anything special, to my ears anyway, the low notes are very week, compared to the Copeland’s relatively strong low D, and there’s some characteristics of the Copeland that makes it an amazing Low D. Well, it’s been a few months when I last tried to Cillian low Ds, but I wasnt impressed that much when I tried them.

I’ve never heard a cillian but I can provide some copeland clips if you need any as comparisons. I’d like to hear a Cillian clip if anyone’s got one.

I agree with Az. You are comparing chocolate pudding and pot de creme, here.

Jessie - I agree with respect to Copeland, but I love chocolate pudding (what is pot de creme, anyway?)

Regards,

Philo

Pot de creme is the french homemade version of chocolate pudding…much more rich in texture and flavor.

I have both the Copeland Low D & Cillian O’Briain Low D (actually the C/D combo).
I agree with Azalin’s leaning, not that there’s anything particularly wrong with the O’Briain, but I prefer the Copeland because of its sound “fullness” and “richness” that I perceive. Fingering is slightly different on each. My fingers seem to “slide” easier on the Copeland, whereas my fingertips “catch” a bit on the O’Briain holes, not really a big pro or con one way or the other to me, but a minor distinction to be noted. The O’Briain is lighter than my brass Copland, neither a pro or con in my view, just different.
I have always felt that I received great value for my Copeland dollars, and I don’t feel nearly as good about the O’Briain combo dollars that I spent.
I really only use Low D’s for my amusement at home, and for playing with some of the tunes/songs during Mass at Church. So, here’s what I’ve done. I have left the C barrel on the O’Briain at all times, and use it only on those few occasions when I need a Low C. The Low C bell note is not loud, but its very much there. When a Low whistle in D is called for, I always use the Copeland.
