Does anyone know of, or have played these whistles? He was a maker of organ pipes, just like Michael Copeland, so it makes me wonder about the quality; they just might be very good. Does anybody know? Of course I haven’t checked with Dale’s site, to see if he has a review.
Thanks,
John
Contact Mr. Steve Power at: http://www.shannaquay.com
I believe he both retails Mr. O’Briens whistles, and knows him as well.
Good luck!
Brian~
Brian,
Thanks for the quick response. The link you gave is where I first heard about these whistles, but I am hoping to hear from someone who has one, or has played one. Maybe his work is too new.
Thanks,
John
My thinking was that if you contacted Steve, (who has no doubt played these whistles), he might be able to put you in touch with Cilian directly. I think the very best place to start when buying a whistle from a top notch maker, is to try and contact the maker directly.
You’ll have a lot of your questions answered, and possibly even a few you didn’t think of! Then it’s good to find others who have played his stuff and get the more telling reviews of the working-class musicians. (please pardon the expression!)
All my best,
Brian~
There are now some unabridged e-mail comments on the ‘What You Say’ page of my website, directly relating to Cillian O’Briain Low D and High D whistles. I can also put people in touch with others who have not given me permission to print their comments, but may be able to give their views privately. I have yet to have a negative comment, so there are none of those to offer (in case you’re wondering where I hid them!)
I am now offering a 30-day money back offer on all Cillian O’Briain Whistles - to make it easier for people to ‘take the plunge’.
Take care
Steve Power

I have the D generation There is nothing the
price range that can come close to it.For twenty buck you get an in tune whistle that play really well. That could save alot of money.I also recommend the CD on the same web site {GEANTRAI]I put it in my all time best 10 CD’s
About a month ago, I purchased the O’Briain Improved D and his Low C/D, through Steve Power at Shannaquay.
Steve’s service was excellent (he shipped the whistles before I sent him my money). In my opinion, the Improved is a very good whistle, and great value, completely in tune effortlessly all two octaves plus, and the lowest breath requirements of my 25 or so whistles. It is to the cyclindricals what the Tweaked Clarke is to the conicals. I’m extremely pleased, and wished I would have had it when I started whistle a year and a half ago. My only concern - it is no louder than my Feadog, Gen, Oak,etc and may not be suitable in Sessiun or amplified group. The Improved will never replace my Glenn Schultz Weasels which remain my personal favorite, but would be a great asset to any collection, beginner or experienced. Reserve my opinion on the Low C/D for a few more weeks, but they both play well.
I purchased an O Briain Low D some weeks ago and I find myself playing it almost too much. It has a beautiful sound. I can’t put the damn thing down! So easy to play and good volume too. People with very small hands may find the lowest hole a stretch, but overall the hole spacing is comfy. No wonder Steve is selling them with money-back-garantee… he knows no one will want to send them back! My advice: Get a Low whistle in your favourite key from Cillian O Briain (or, as I refer to him now, “Saint Cillian”). Get the “Cillian improved” high D as well; I quite agree with all the comments in the above review, it is sweet indeed. Steve at Shanna Quay is great to deal with too. Fast responses to enquiries, and a quick delivery.
