Hey Kendra, I wish you luck with your whistling! Music helps soothing the soul, I believe in that, too. Hope you will be fine from now on. Depression is a nasty thing, it’s good that you got over it.

Yep. Chiff & Fipple level 2…stupid idea. It did produce some good dialogue though ![]()
Cheers,

Good man, David. Can’t wait to see you tonight and have a tune and a song. ![]()

David, Perhaps it wasn’t the best idea but I’m glad you raised it for the useful dialogue that it produced (as you noted). I am also glad that everyone who participated in this thread did so in a respectful manner - especially David who behaved in such a civil manner even though his idea wasn’t terribly well accepted ![]()
That’s because David is such a great guy, and a great whistle (& pipes) player!
One of the things that is personally important to me is the newcomers be received well. It’s a matter of hospitality and good manners. Their questions are not inane, they are simply the questions of beginners. A tiered system would not be ok with me here. It might, however, be a fine project for someone to start up elsewhere. I don’t mean this in a manipulative way at all, I just don’t think it belongs here.
Having said that, I admit that I think it would be lovely if people would try the SEARCH function before they post some questions. Maybe rich and I can figure out some way to make the search function more conspicuous or to provide some kind of regular reminder to people about it.

Imagine a board dedicated to Generations and one just for Sindt whistles. A review board and a jig board and a reel board. That would make things easy to locate. We could have a G-rated and R-rated flame board. And, of course, an OT board. It they’re successful, a religion and politics board. And, as long as people don’t start dissappearing off the planet, a (shhhh) Crystal People board. Rich could set up filters for the posts so they’d be automatically filed in the appropriate boards. Am I crazy? Be gentle, now… Oh, and a Loren board! That would be wild.
(Bloomfield, no dumb questions out of you.) Hey yeah, a dumb question board. I think I need a sudonim (and a spellchecker). I should be upstairs practicing.
Tony
Tony, have a look at some of the guitar boards. Most have about 12 sections for each model and sub-brand of the particular guitar, amp and effects, plus a performers and sometimes a recording area but in the end a lot of people just post in the off-topic area anyway.
Mastersound, I think I’ll pass on that suggestion. We started the Clips and Snips board (not me) for the purpose of discussing music specifically so the posts wouldn’t get buried under the mass of the main board. It really doesn’t get used for that. I use it to post updates for peoples’ convenience so people remember Clips and Snips is alive and well (and hopefully generate more submissions).
Clowning aside, I browse the topic headings nowadays and look at some that interest me. Some, I skip. I don’t own a lot of different brand whistles, so I can’t suggest much to newbies about that. If I see a query about Waltons vs Generations, I don’t even look. I will throw in my two bits about what I know about if it doesn’t get covered adequately by others. I don’t want to bother repeating other people except to maybe reinforce that they’re on track if I think so. I will make comments on practice technique when it’s asked for. I think I have some useful tips there. I’ve been practicing hard core for over 5yrs now and I played a good bit a number of years ago (1970’s). I’m a fanatic for Irish music. I’ve been collecting recordings since the 70’s, so I often recommend things that are not current but I feel are classic and can be learned from. And, I can’t resist clowning about anything worth laughing at. (Especially ourselves when things get too serious)
I take this whole board thing, as well as myself, with a large grain of salt. I’m here because I find it entertaining and occasionally useful. I have no trouble ignoring stuff (and people) that would otherwise annoy me. I’ve been snapped at a couple of times. I simply stopped communication with those individuals. I just don’t have that kind of emotional involvement with people like that. I feel no compulsion to change their minds, correct their manners, or anything. Sometimes, I read the flame wars out of a fascination for peoples’ interactions. I don’t feel connected to it, though. On the other hand, I’ve shared strong grief with some people on the board who mentioned the deaths of dear ones. I felt the hurt of good friends. And I’ve shared really fun and personal emails with people from the board that I would truly love to meet in person some day. (A few, I have met, and it was great.)
To summarize my attitude, I’ll be here as long as it’s fun. I’ll seek out the fun parts as long as there are some. Some of the OT stuff has been excellent. Those boxing with the wife stories (is it Joe?) are classic. I hope to see more of them. Do you want to see a picture of me playing whistle on top of Half Dome? Sorry I don’t have any cat pictures.

I’m dedicated to keeping my life as simple as possible. Cheers,

Well, David, while you unsettled me (one of those newbies) a tad with this thread, I have to say you are a pretty good egg about the response.

Why not move the Search function into a little blue box at the top next to the New Topic and Post Reply boxes? Or to really highlight it, make the Search box a different color.

This is one thread I want to be a part of! I think it shows how people can discuss their differences in a polite fashion and reach conclusions without resorting to sarcasm. I agree that we should all stay together on one board. Not only is it of benefit to new comers to learn from the experience of the group but it is an opportunity for the experienced players to thank all those who have helped them in the past by returning the favor to others.
On the practical side, questions that get asked many times by new comers only need to be answered once! After that it is just a matter of copy and paste with maybe slight modifications! I hope someone asks about whistle tutorials. I have a file already to go!
A group this large will never agree on everything, but it is a pleasure when we can disagree in a positive way.
Best wishes, Tom
Maybe we could put together a FAQ with links to appropriate forum threads.

I know this topic is getting a bit old, but I had two things to add.
First, although I am new to the board, I’m not so very new to the whistle and I’m sure there are others like me who wouldn’t mind answering the same old basic questions over again. It might even make us feel that we are contributing something!
Second, some discussions are worth another look, even if they’ve been done before. I can go back and read the views of old-timers on American tunes on the whistle, for example, but maybe someone who didn’t chime in the last time has something interesting to say. I don’t imagine everyone wants to reread the old thread on this topic, so I don’t want to refresh it. Wouldn’t it be worth starting a new one?
Just wanted to add: I did decide to start a new one.
