Chieftain blues. So disappointed. Is it just me?

I found the sweet spot by spending an afternoon getting used to the feel and sound of my Chieftains (D and low D).

I try to play as softly as possible, try to hit notes in the 2nd octave with the same pressure as the first octave, only changing embouchere. Once I started hitting notes cleanly, with minimum pressure, I worked on that aspect, playing scales, and bits of tunes.

The best way I can describe it is that it is as if you try to find the absolute minimum pressure you need to play a note in either octave, and add a wee bit more pressure for stability (if that makes sense).

The experience you are having with the Chieftain is exactly like mine. I just put it down after practicing for about a half hour (you’re right about the metallic taste). Today, I did get a really nice sound out of it (maybe because it’s earlier, and I’m not so worried about the neighbors - this thing is LOUD). But I am still having trouble with the upper octaves, especially anything above the high D.

I promised to keep at it, and I will. But just for kicks, I picked up my Clarke afterwards and played a few tunes, and man, I sounded 10 times better than I ever have before. I really think the Chieftain requires a bit more of an aggressive and assertive playing style, and when I applied that to my Clarke, wow :sunglasses:

About the whole eBay thing. eBay is for everything these days. Welcome to capitalism. There was a time, not long ago, when it was more like a yard sale online - normal folks selling their junk to us, and we to them. This was before PayPal, and I remember running down to the bank and getting money orders printed up and into the mail. Ahhh, my youth.

It’s a different game these days, but you can still really find some great deals if you look. Just yesterday, I ordered a slightly worn pair of LL Bean boots for an absolute steal! I could have used them today!

The Chieftain Soprano D is good for combat only. You can hit people on the head with it, or destroy their inner organs by playing it.

I’ve been on C&F for a couple of years and seen waves of people come and go, each generation re-writing history, $100 per lesson.

My recommendations for good high end Soprano D whistles (I’ve played them):

Burkes (for medium volume)
Syn (for high volume)

For low volume: that Clarke sounds good to me!

Ha, Zoob, nice try, my mesmerizing friend. But a man of the cloth isn’t beaten that easily (special training, you know).
