CD suggestions for a newbie, please?

Hi…

I’ve only been playing (or trying to play) the whistle for a couple of years, the low D for about 6 months. After reading some of the threads here I realize I need some help in adding to my music collection. My area would probably be considered ‘culturally’ lacking. I couldn’t even find a music store here that sells whistles. Finally found a Sweetone at a flea market. Thank Heavens I stumbled across The Whistle Shop on an internet search.

But I digress from my original plea. I have Joanie Madden, The Chieftains, James Galway, Nightnoise, Eileen Ivers and some ‘collections’

Any suggestions, favorite groups, or soloists?

Thanks!
~Judy
(I also need some help with sone of the abbreviations used here - is there a C&F 101? )

Welcome!

Right off the top of my head, I’d suggest Mary Bergin, Laurence Nugent and Tim Britton (he’s a bit hard to find), LE McCullough. that’ll hold ya for a while… :stuck_out_tongue:

I am going to plug those donating to Freeman benefit raffle:

If I left anyone out please make additions.

Thank you, Paul & Bill, for taking the time to help me. I’m heading for the local Borders tomorrow armed with your suggestions. Hope most of them are available. If Talbert’s CD is not at Borders I will check out his website.

Thanks again!

I was going to suggest anything by Micho Russell, but you can get some great examples or Micho’s playing, and quite a few other sublime Trad. players, and FREE to boot,by following the Chiff link to the transcriptions page on Brother Steve’s whistle site.
Also, you will get transcriptions and commentary on the recordings,AND be able to follow Bro’ Steve Jones’ whistle lessons.
Thus you’ll not only hear some great whistle (and Flute)players, but also Learn something about the art of I-Trad. playing too!

The Whistle Shop has CDs. We might as well buy from them before the big, franchised music stores.

I have the “Celtic Moon” CD and find it to be quite enjoyable.

I forgot to mention that whistle is the dominant instrument on the Celtic Moon CD. Its a good choice if you are wanting to hear a lot of whistle music that isn’t buried in a bunch of other stuff. And, it really is beautiful music…

Thanks Kevin, Dwight … I appreciate the help.

I visited Bro. Steve’s website when I first started playing, but lost the link. Thanks for reminding me of what a great website he has, Kevin.

Dwight, I have several CDs on order thru The Whistle Shop – Thom Larson is great! I get almost all of my whistles through him. He always take time to answer questions, no matter how dumb.

The Borders selection was lacking … couldn’t even find Mary Bergin. I’m going to be looking for a good online source, I guess.
