Is there a CD player out there which can play half speed without pitch change? I have the Amazing Slowdowner on computer, but I hate being tied to this infernal machine. There was a post a while back about Lark in the Morning’s ad for a Marantz $600 player with this ability, but the price is more than I would spend, not to mention desiring never again to patronize the place. Is there something relatively small, not too expensive, and amenable to those who are electronically challenged?
I would love to know of one, myself! Especially one that works for the technically challenged ~ Thanks! I just got a great Mandolin CD (Shatter the Calm) that I would LOVE to be able to play along with.

Prices are dropping for Professional quality CD players with seperate speed and pitch controllers. Not long ago units like this were over $1,000US
This looks like the cheapest unit ($400) that has individual control of pitch and speed and also features looping ability, so you can pick a start point and a stop point and loop just that section continuously.
Anyone out there have one of these??? It looks like something I’d be interested in, but $400.00 !!! That’s at least a day of overtime pay for me!
Why not slow down the piece on your computer and then burn a disc? That’s what I do (I use Transcribe rather than Slowdowner). CD burners are a lot less than any of the players mentioned, and discs are basically free these days.
There is a plugin for winamp that slows music down without changing the tone. I use it all the time (it’s called “slowmewp”) and it’s great. All you would have to do is “rip” the tune you want to learn and play it back in winamp. You could slow it down as much as you like.
I just downloaded slowmewp; it installed fine on my Win 98 Winamp and does exactly what it says on the tin. Yeay!
I have been using this plug-in with Winamp for a while now and I amd quite pleased with it. But Murph was looking for a way to get away from the computer. I used to frequent a dance school where they had exactly what Murph is looking for. Unfortunately I don’t remember the brand name of the players. However, they were a major brand like Panasonic or Sony or Sharp. I bet if you go to their websites you could find the product numbers. Then you could search for a vender who discounts the list price. Good luck.
