All,
I’m dropping my asking price on the CB Folk flute to $215 and I’ll pay shipping in the US. It’s a great flute, but I want a different one. PM me if interested.
Cheers,
Tony

Hi, Tony,
So you got the Hamilton! Awesome! How do you like it? Did you get blackwood?
And you’re selling the Casey Burns already? And you bought a Dessi Serry too?? Man, have you been busy!
I haven’t been playing my flute at all, just playing my fife and gearing up for the upcoming Civil War reenacting season. We start next month, but we’ve already done a few events like parades and ceremonies.
Have a great new year with your new flutes! I’m curious how they all compare.

You’re not playing your flute? You should really send it to me and I’ll take care of it while your off fifing. ![]()
I’ve been thinking about writing up a review but I don’t know if I can. I think I’d just sound like a commercial: It’s great. No it’s greater than great, etc… No, really it’s GREAT! ![]()
I decided to sell the the Burns because in the words of my teacher “…when you get the Hammy you wont play it [Burns] anymore.” And that’s mostly true. I got a ‘used’ Blackwood Hammy, from Hammy. (I don’t know why that makes me smile…
) The head and body were in mint condition but Hammy had to turn a new barrel and foot for it. I got it real reasonable too.
The Seery actually gets played less than the Burns now. I find that funny because I got the Seery because I wanted a big holed monster that was all weather, after the original head joint on the Burns cracked. But Casey replaced the head so all is good there.
Well, The Hammy is great. It’s so easy to play. It can take a lot of air so you don’t accidentially jump octaves. It can play REALLY loud. Soft is a bit harder, but I’m working on that. Voicing is a little raspy all the time, but I like it. I’m sure as I get better and I get to know the flute more, I’ll be able to get a larger variation in voice, but I’m happy with it. The tone holes are big. Make no mistake, they are big. Luckily I had been playing the Seery a lot before the Hammy came so I was used to big tone holes. The Hammy only has slight larger holes (and only on some holes) than the Seery.
I think it’s made me a better player too. Maybe just all the playing I’ve done has done that, but I think the Hammy has helped. I can get into the second octave pretty easy now, still some work to be done, but a lot easier than I could before I got it. Now when I give the Hammy a break and pick up the Burns it almost seems the Burns is a completely new instrument. I can bellow out tunes, change voicing easily, or play at a whisper (as long as I stay in the lower notes). Not that Burns was ever not fun to play but now it seems funner? ![]()
Is that good? I don’t know that I can do a good job describing/comparing them. The Hammy is far superior, but the Burns is a great stick. Don’t get me wrong about that. I’ve decided that I’m not going to budge on the price on the Burns, and I might just take it off the market because I do love it. But, the Hammy has also made me want keys. Very badly. I had been just curious about keys, now I want them. ![]()
Let me think about this… To me I’ve received the brass ring in the keyless realm. I’d like to try out some other makers’ sticks, but I can’t imagine one being better, equal sure. Better? No way!
If there’s anything specific you want to know I can try to answer. Remember though, I’m just a beginner with a handful of tunes under my belt. (Which reminds me I need to record my scoiltrad tunes for assessment)
Cheers,
Tony
P.S. If I babbled which I’m sure I did. It’s a combination of just getting up after a long night, and being so impressed that words escape me. ![]()
I don’t doubt for a minute that the Hammy is a better flute.
I wish I had more specific questions to ask, but I’m really a beginner on flute too, and have only played a small handful of different flutes.
It’s nice to hear that the Hammy can play loud, I like that kind of thing. What size is the bore compared to the other two flutes?
I enjoyed reading your review! It’s nice to see how enthusiastic you are about it.

I guess editing a post doesn’t bring back to ‘on topic’? Anyway, I’ve dropped the price I’m asking for the CB folk flute. See above.
Cheers,
Tony
That is a good price for an excellent beginner’s
flute. Best
suggest you post this on the whistle board, too
Now, I believe, Mr. Grixxly, is the time when I get to say “Neener, neener, told you so.” (on both the Burns for sale and better player counts, as I recall, hmmmmm?)
Sorry, I couldn’t resist. It’s so rare to get to gloat.
Meanwhile … Congrats, enjoy, & don’t worry about the keys; they’ll come. In the meantime, just worry about pitch and tone and style and technique and tunes, tunes, tunes!

cat.
