case solution

found a good solution to the case problem. something that is protective, easy to carry, lots of pockets and storage and does not require taking off the bass reg cap, bass reg, or any part with a reed (no exposed reeds). the only things you have to remove are the bass and tenor drone slides.

a double violin case with the center section (the part that supports the two violin necks) removed. I can’t believe I hand’t thought of it earlier…

I use a Ritter tenor sax case (gig bag). Comes with all sorts of carrying straps including some so you can carry it like a backpack. Lots of room inside for pipes, and flute and whistles and my music stand as well. I got mine for about $80 CAD

yeah…i fit everything in mine that used to fit in the big case…same stuff and a toolkit. I just hated playing with reeds every time…i just knew one would eventually get broken if it kept on like that

Antaine, please post a picture of that.
I’m using a violin case but you have to break-down the set for travel. Removing the bass drone extension and the bass regulator (with reed) extension.

Last night I put my set into a bass guitar gig-bag and everything fit perfectly without having to pull the pipes apart. It’s nearly 48" long though.

I’ve looked into the same kind of case (violin) as well. When I get a full set one of these dayts I’ll probably go that route.

One of the members in our club uses a tenor sax hard case that has the partions removed.

Tenor saxophone case:

You still have to remove parts to get pipes to fit.

I use a -Weekend Stand Bag 6" - Golfclub bag so you donot need to dismount your pipes.

One o those huge Shotgun cases might work…

Of course that would be kinda hard to get on a plane…

the entire lid is a zipper pocket on the outside, plus the two compartments on the inside for bits and pieces. the note you see has my name address and phone number and is offering a no questions asked reward for the return of the pipes.

This has been posted here before but it was a great tip. I got a McSpadden dulcimer case. There is a little divider in there that you pull out and it makes a great case. I can get my full set in there without taking anything apart. I can’t quite fit my bellows in them but they have a really stiff output tube. If I broke the set down a bit I could probably get them in there. Here’s the link. I could post a picture with my set in them if anyone is curious.

This is what I have been using as a case lately. Pretty darn sturdy, but a tad too heavy…

yes, but we’re not all fortunate enuff to have a contract with Iron Maiden…

Here’s a picture of the case with two chanters. One is in pipe insulation, one isn’t. I don’t have my bellows in the case but it can be done if you take off the U. I have a couple little cases with reeds and stuff as well as a little humidity gauge in there as well.

…I’m not exactly certain just how fortunate I really am in that regard.

For light duty with a half set, I’ve been using a Martin Backpacker guitar bag. I only have to push the drone slide all the way in and the whole thing fits, with bellows and all.
