Calling all Olwells...

Hi everyone.

I ordered a keyed flute from Patrick Olwell almost 4 years ago - at that point, the wait was about 5 years. So I’m expecting to hear from him in the next year or so. But I haven’t played an Olwell since I ordered, and in the meantime I’ve found a great Rudall, which I’m now playing. So it’ll be decision time soon.

In short, I’m wondering whether anyone who owns/plays an Olwell flute will be at the all-Ireland Fleadh next weekend in Listowel, Co. Kerry. I think it may be about the last opportunity I get to try to decide! So if anyone’s going, it’d be great if I could maybe meet up with you… please? I know those Olwell players can be just a leeeeetle overprotective sometimes…
Thanks!
Deirdre

Deirdra,

If you decide you don’t want the keyed Olwell, DON’T cancel your order!! I’ll buy the flute from you as soon as it’s ready, and pay you for your time. I’m serious, please contact me if you decide you don’t want the Olwell!!!

Loren

Loren:
I see I wasn’t even close when I said that Olwell owners could be a LITTLE overprotective! There’s lots of time before I have to make a decision - 4 years’re up at Christmas, and it’d be another year before the flute’d be ready - so hold your horses!

Sorry if I seemed overly excited, I just wanted to be first in line, just in case

Good luck making that tough decision!

Loren

Wow, Loren, now I’m kinda scared - you mean there might be more takers??? They don’t tell you about this kind of thing when you join up…

Well Dierdre:

Loren is first in line, if the principle is first come, first served. If the principle is maximizing your profit…I’m your man. I’ll pay more for the keyed Olwell. I have about 1-2 years to wait for my own keyed number.

Actually, to keep on Olwell’s radar screen you should call him once every 6 months or so, so that he remembers you. You’ll get your flute faster. If you want he can just send the flute directly to me (he’s more that got my address), and I’ll pay you.

Kidding aside, Just becuase you have the Rudall, you should still get the Olwell. It’s a very different flute. Keep it, you can ALWAYS sell it.

Well now, maximising profit… hmmm!
All kidding aside, though, I’m not really thinking about not getting the Olwell at this point. I’d really like to get to play some Olwells at some stage this year, and that was the purpose of this thread - rather than to attract possible buyers… Although I do now have a more secure financial basis on which to buy the Olwell! (Being a penniless college student and all that…)

That’s twice you’ve dissed me now G., and I promise I won’t forget it.

Loren

Loren, it’s a capitalist country after all, isn’t it? Who pays most comes first.

Greetings-

As a happy Olwell flute owner two times over (a blackwood and a rosewood keyless), I say do whatever it takes to get your hands on that keyed Olwell! Patrick’s flutes all have a certain magic to them, IMHO - - you won’t be disappointed.

All the best,
Kieran

Brother Loren:

I just haven’t gotten over that situation with the Grinter Low F a couple of years ago, my friend.

C’mon, man, what else could I do? I have to deal with Chinese business tactics all day long.

Hey man, I spoke with Pat yesterday, and he has pretty much just returned so I won’t see my Bb for another month. Bummer!

Well, Loren’s in line for the Olwell, but if you keep that, how about selling me the Rudall?

Kevin Krell

G.,

Geeze, I guy makes one honest mistake… I’ve got news for you: You wouldn’t have won the bidding for that Grinter Low F, I know you think you would have, but one of the other bidders was even more financially equipped than you (since you brought it up).

So let it go man, I’m the one who really suffered: If it weren’t for my mental lapse, I could have gotten a fortune for the thing. Instead it ended up going to the lowest bidder.

Kevin,

C’mon man, you KNOW she’s not going to be able to part with the Rudall

Loren

Hey Loren:

No one said anything about financially equipped, my interest is strictly about motivation! Enough said. No more dissing.

Is that the short form of “cannibal”?

Well, Kevin, I don’t want to discourage you, but, um, NO! I’m keeping the Rudall firmly within my grasp - or clutches, if you will ! The question is really whether the Olwell would justify the expense - but there are no plans to part with the Rudall… [There, there, #2196, there’s no need to get upset…]
Deirdre

Deirdre,

If you haven’t even named it, what makes you think you’re going to keep it?

Kevin Krell

:stuck_out_tongue:! I’m actually starting to think that I’m not obsessed enough for this message board :frowning:
Deirdre

[Edited because I can’t use the smilies! And because I may be causing hope by not naming my flute - sorry, but note the MY!

I don’t know if this discussion is still ongoing or not, but here’s my post. I own an Olwell, an M&E and a very clever, mint-condition Rudall copy made c. 1860s (on which I use an Olwell head-joint). Even with that head, my Olwell Pratten blows the Rudall and every other flute I’ve ever played out of the water. Dierdre, YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY! The wait is well worth it. If anyone plays guitar out there I can sort of compare it to playing a cheapo, laminate guitar and then playing some multi-thousand dollar handcrafted instrument. No comparison. I’ve played flutes by most of the makers out there (except for Mike Grinter, and that irks me. Maybe the next time I see Kevin Crawford and the lads from Lunasa) and the Olwell is head-joint and shoulders above everything. You will be able to play like you never have before. Oh, and do call Patrick and demand a time estimate every few months or so. Eventually you’ll have a flute!

Slan,
Zac

Sorry Deirdre, got the “e” and “i” mixed up last time!
