c# below bottom d

i never knew this note existed and i don’t think i’ve ever heard it being played - can anyone shed any light on it for me?

One just does not completely seat/seal/cover the bottom of the chanter on the leg/popping strap, giving the chanter an angled/glancing blow at the surface. Takes some practice. Saw Joe McKenna do this once. Generated howls/hoots from the assembled pipers.

There was an article about recently in NPU’s magazine.

I dug through my bookshelf and found the issue - The article was by Wilbert Garvin, in An Piobaire (Volume 6, Number. 2, April 2010) entitled Low C on the Pipes. Essentially, half holing the Low D on the leg. Wilbert Garvin said it’s closer to C# than C natural, but it’s hardly noticeable at speed.
