Buy a SUSATO High D/Kevin Crawford Pro-file

If you are a beginner and want a GREAT whistle, save your money and get a SUSATO high D.
I saw Kevin Crawford from Lunasa play his the other night and was blown away by the sound of his SUSATO high D.
You can see him play it at www.kerrywhistles.com in the MOVIES section under PRO-FILES Look for SUSATO.
I use these whistles all the time and can’t fault them for the price.
I have played many whistle much more costly and still come back to the SUSATO.Break it ,loose it,somebody steels it,get another.
…just my opinion man!
Phil.

It’s why I picked one up…originally. They sure can pop as well, I find they are a lot of fun to play because of this popping, although my ears disagree when I hit that high b and the occasional high c.

What do you mean by popping? You mentioned this in another thread about Susatos. I am a beginner and I haven’t heard that term.

I believe that that is a C Whistle that is the “Island Paddy” Set which appears on “The Kinnitty Sessions” and in the liner notes it says Kevin plays a C whistle on that set. I had been wondering what type of high whistle he uses.

When doing ornaments they tend to be a lot cleaner than on other whistles. For instance, a roll is really nice on a Susato because there is a stark contrast between each cut and tap. Similarly, crans sound really good on Susatos as well. I think this has something to do with having to push a little bit harder to jump up to the next octave ie the low end is stronger than most whistles.

Does anyone else know what I am talking about?

I must have a got a dud one…don’t like it at all
And the lower end is very weak, compared to the 2nd octave.

Thank you michael. I do have a Susato and two other whistles. I will see if I can hear a difference such as you are describing. I may not be far enough along yet. But it is an interesting idea. I do not normally play the Susato because it is so loud I can hardly stand it.

Your opinion, and a link to your website… They blend in so well.

…yeah man ,it’s fun to take a dig from behind the screen, whats the matter? scared someone might find out you are a complete ****.
Why hide behind a false name and take digs, you don’t leave anything about yourself at all just a false name and a stupid pic.
Come out from behind the screen and lets know who you are tough guy.
Phil.

post script:now I get it.

Jeez!..just about says it all.Bring on the fog.

For crying out loud, can we all please get off Phil’s back?

Now we’re raggin’ him for lauding a player & a whistle he doesn’t even sell? And where else but HIS WEBSITE can he conveniently post & share music?

I know Phil’s no saint, but I haven’t seen too many of those posting on this board, so give the man the right to express his opinion and share his joys, and exercise your right to ignore his posts, not click on hiis links, and PM him if you still feel the urge to tell him he’s naughty!

EVERYBODY CHILL!!!

nice video! I may have to get another Susato now…

My first whistle was a one-piece Susato Eb that I got many years ago before I knew anything about whistles or trad. Irish music.

What exactly is the point of a response like this? It doesn’t achieve anything except to get up someones nose and piss people off. Don’t read Phil’s posts if you don’t like the guy.

So much fighting. The fact isd Phil is a nice guy and he sells some great Whistles, just got a Low F I love it.

It all comes down to perspective. If you want to see Phil as constantly promoting himself then every mention of his website will prove you right. However, his website does indeed promote other makers whistles, has some free tutorial clips that I found very useful as a newbie whistler and other content that is a service to whistling kind.

Ive visited his site a number of times and never felt compelled to buy his whistles in every key available (lack of money may be a factor here), so even if he is into self promotion, you dont have to be influenced! Cut him some slack.

Well, I’m not a big fan of Susatos, but I must admit that this guy make it sound extremely well.
When looking at his fingers the video looks like it’s on fast forward
Lunasa is a awesome, I like it a lot.

And in my opinion Phil is doing a great thing reviewing and letting other people hear whistles from other makers. I think it’s completely fair to have to go to his site to see the clips… after all the maker and the player are both the same person.

I would agree with you if his website was whistleplaying.com or something similar, but the url is kerrywhistles.com, and any mention to his website, whatever the reason, sounds like a marketing jab to me. So it’s all too easy to go around, look nice and spam kerrywhistles.com. Most other makers would never use their website in their posts like he does. Ever wondered why? Now that’s some meat to reply to, ohhh horde of Philly’s defenders!

Promote whistling at all costs!
Ian

So, are you saying that because he’s a whistle maker it shouldn’t be allowed to express his opinion? Or review other whistles? Or maybe that he should make a new website with a different name an no references to his whistles (only to other maker’s) just because you don’t like reading www.kerrywhistles.com ?
Everything is a give and take, doesn’t matter if you’re aware of that or you are not. I believe that the video is worth a visit to www.kerrywhistles.com (even when I’m not a Susato fan). And if I didn’t like Phil, I wouldn’t read any posts made by him, is really that simple IMO

Who cares

I think there’s a small number of very vocal people who have a “if you’re not for me, you’re against me” attitude when it comes to Phil. This isn’t really constructive, but this kind of zealotry among a small minority is able to be found anywhere people gather to talk about a subject, really. I’m sure that there are people on African Violet growers sites who argure bitterly about points of contention that’d just leave me puzzling in wonderment.

I myself have been on the receiving end of some hard words in here in public, and in my email box in private, simply because I choose a more middle ground and don’t profess hate for the guy, and happen to have liked some of his whistles.

Eventually, it’ll becomes pretty obvious which posters are likely to stir the pot whenever Phil’s name is mentioned, even if it does start to sound a bit like a broken record after a while.
