Bucks of Oranmore - Paddy Keenan's version

I’m trying to work out the first few notes of Paddy Keenan’s version of the Bucks of Oranmore. I’m listening to the recording on the Bothy Band’s Live at the BBC album (track 13). Sometimes it sounds to me like he just plays an A with no ornamentation. In other cases, he plays some sort of ornament which starts on the A and then sounds like a bottom D, F#, A triplet.

Any ideas?
