broken finger

Now when I say I can’t play my whistle, it means something other than “I’m talent deficient”. About a month ago I was playing with my 8-yr old. I picked him up and put him down in an empty laundry basket. In the process, I twisted one of my fingers and this week, learned it is fractured.

I can’t play my whistle for a while, although some would say I never could play it. As a substitute, I have been experimenting with a bowed psaltry. So far, the experiment has not been a great success.

Is this instrument ever used by celtic musicians? Does anyone know of a website featuring free instructional material on this instrument?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Try turning one of your cheapie whistles into a tabor pipe by covering the top 3 holes with tape. YOu can now play a full octave with one hand. Ignore the low register, and overblow , starting up on the second D. Play D,E,F# and G as usual. Then put your fingers back down and overblow even more-- instead of a higher D, you will get an A, and can similarly play B,C#, and a very high D. Fun for the finger impaired!!

Thanks for the tip! Hmm, now where did I put that tape?
