Anyone jerry-rig up a 'key' on a whistle? (I've got SSF..)

Hi all -

During my recent passings thru various stages of WHOA (yeees I’ll admit..even picked up a recorder) I’ve found I really prefer the sound of a lower pitched whistle.
My problem is Seriously Short (and small) Fingers. I have a Susato ‘‘A’’ which has a nice sound but the bottom hole is not only a bit too far a reach, it’s also too big for me to cover it..even with the most creative (and painful) of grips.
Since it was unplayable for me in it’s present condition, I decided to dedicate its life to science. It now possesses a primitive ‘key’ of sorts, which still requires quite a bit of ‘pressing’..so it’s not really the answer.
Has any one of you, who may be ‘short-handed’ yourselves, ever rigged up a functional key on a whistle? I’d really appreciate some suggestions, ideas, advice, opinions, the number of a good psychiatrist etc. - whatever you come up with.

Happy Holidays to ya!

OMG

welcome&happy christmas!!

it’s best to learn piper’s grip first http://www.chiffandfipple.com/pipers.html my fingers ar pointed slightly downwards, but try what ever feels best.

and pick a whistle you love to hear most http://www.tinwhistletunes.com/clipssnip/index.htm

after this you could buy a lower key, but try the whistle out first.
if you can’t, find a maker who gives you your money back after a try out, if you don’t like the whistle.

welcome to the board! the previous comment has great advice.
(piper’s grip!) this is highly recommended especially for those who are
new to the instrument! some have swithced over to this grip after some
yrs of playing and enjoy the the feel! it feels somewhat uncomfortable
at first. but your finger “pads” will make the adjustment soon enough!!!
more photos of the piper’s grip-http://www.talbertstclaire.com.

Thanks for the info on the piper’s grip. I’ll try it out for awhile and see how it goes. (hoping maybe my ‘‘A’’ can be saved after all!)

OMG

Dhá gcloisfeá sé - bheadh a fhios agat…

hi there! you are more than welcome! and again, welcome to the board!
keep in mind though, the piper’s grip will hurt at first for a while! try to
relax your grip w/out tightening at all.this i guarantee if you are patient
enough, will help!!! all the best!

OMG, If you want to jury rig a key on it you might want to contact Daniel Bingamon, a regular poster on the forum. http://www.bingamon.com/jubilee.htm He has developed a key system for whistles.

best,
