This year’s Boxwood flute festival in Nova Scotia (july 22-28) will feature instruction and performances by Kevin Crawford, Jean-Michel Veillon, and Paddy Keenan (pipes) in addition to festival director Chris Norman. Registration opens in February. Details at:
What a wonderful experience that would be! Veillon is one of my favorite players–his tone and nuance in playing! If anyone has gone in past years, please share your experiences. I’m sure we’d all love to hear about it.
Thanks, Jeanie
…unbelievable
I’m going to cry…
That wonderful workshop in Ireland, Boxwood in July, my husband lost his job, I didn’t get a raise in pay (I think the boss’s very expensive divorce had something to do with that..).
Well, I guess I will just work very hard at home with my recordings.
That way, if I ever get to go to anything, I’ll be ready! ![]()
I guess there’s no use crying about it.
Hey, if I have a nice house session sometime soon, do you suppose I can lure some cool guest flutists over…?
Mary
I went last year. If you’re going I would highly recommend taking some extra time to get up to Ceilidh season in Cape Breton. It’s absolutely wonderful. I had at least as much fun meeting people up there as I did at Boxwood! We also visited John Walsh’s pipe shop in Antigonish on the way back to Lunenburg.
I had a lot of fun at Boxwood. And I would certainly love to go again just to see all those players! But by far, the funnest part for me was meeting all the participants and teachers alike, and sharing music with them. At times, I felt I could’ve gotten more out of some of the classes. Sometimes they ended up being more like a tune-learning session. I had just come from music school studying classical flute, and I felt I got the most out of a baroque masterclass session. I really loved being heard and hearing other players individually. I felt it offered the greatest opportunity to feel more comfortable with my music and how to play it in a way that I most enjoy.
Either way, it’s great fun and I’d definitely recommend that anyone who is interested go and check it out!!! It’s beautiful.
It’s worth going for any one of the flute players. And having them all together at one venue makes Boxwood the best workshop of the year. The icing on the cake is <<David & Nina SHOREY - flute scholars and dealers in historical flutes>>. These folks have been collecting and selling flutes for well over twenty years. Go. Take a loan out and go. Sell whatever it takes to get there, but go.
