Bore Diameters of a Goldie Low F?

Greetings. Could someone please give me the bore measurements of their Goldie Low F, preferably one made in the last 5 years. I need the inner and outer diameters of the bottom of the tube. I’m just wondering how they compare to my Löfgren Low F.

Thanks and Happy New Year!

Randy

I do not know about current Goldie whistle dimensions,
but Overtone low F and low G whistles were made from 7/8" alu tubing, with 3/4" bore (16 SWG wall thickness).
I imagine Colin continued with these dimensions.
Hope this helps!

Thanks Hans. That’s pretty close to my Löfgren’s measurements except it’s diameter is about 1/32" less than 7/8". It seems Colin had told me that for his newer Goldies he had recently started having his tubes custom made. Just wondering because the Löfgren seems really light to me for a low F (not that much smaller than the Overtons you mentioned but possibly made of a lighter alloy? Sweden aluminum compared to German? Wonder if there’s a difference). The only metal low F’s I remember playing are a Reyburn brass/delrin, an Ethnic Wind, my Löfgren, and I think a Chieftain gold (a brass F though that may have been an A in retrospect). Anyway, I’ve just been wondering if Colin’s were any heavier. For some reason a heavier F seems more appealing to me though other aluminum F’s will probably weigh about the same. The Löfgren is a killer whistle though. My favorite yet. Though I haven’t tried one of yours yet, Hans. I hear they’re amazing.

Thanks for the help!
Randy

The measurements are nominal, and could vary. Standard tubing does vary. Also you get a slight thinner body by sanding the tube.

My own whistles are lighter, because I use thinner tubing, with wall thickness of 1mm on high whistles and 1.2mm on lower ones, compared to the thicker 1.6mm tubes on the Overton and Chieftain whistles.

Right. I assumed mine was probably the same size tube sanded a little more than the Overton you mentioned. Thanks again, Hans.

Hello just thought I add my 2 cents…

the tube size is 7/8" and the wall thickness is 1.6 mm. I presume that the Löfgren F is made with 1.5mm wall thickness as this would be the standard wall thicknesses you can buy in continental Europe. The UK with also inch-measurements can have different thicknesses for the walls and Colin’s tube drawn to his needs can have 1,64mm thickness depending on the keys. The 0.1mm thinner wall makes a difference in weight even on a smaller whistle.

Hello Brigitte. Thanks for adding your 2 cents, though coming from you two it’s worth 2 gold bricks. (:
Thought I’d ask here first and give you two a chance to recover from the holiday rush. Yes, the measurements you gave match the Löfgren. So, with the extra 0.1mm wall thickness Colin’s tube would be a bit heavier which would be a plus for me. Also, part of the perceived lightness of the Löfgren has to do with the way his design has the tuning slide attached to the tube rather than the head like Colin’s. That makes the Löfgren slightly “top-light” as opposed to slightly top-heavy (neither a bad thing, as both have a well-balanced distribution of weight. Just something I noticed.) Comparing the fipple of my Goldie low C to the Löfgren low F, which is shaped similar to the older Chieftains, or rather like Tony Dixon’s heads, the Goldie seems to just have more metal in the fipple design. Anyway, it’s apples and oranges, but I was just wondering.

Thanks for clearing that up, Brigitte! My new low C and D Colin made me are a dream. I may be in touch with you guys in a few months about an F.

Glad you’ve had a good start to a new year.
Take care,
Randy
