Just curious to know how many of us whistle/flute players also play uilleann pipes? I know that there are quite a few I’ve talked to on this board before who have mentioned it.
Would anyone besides me find it helpful to start a uilleann pipe board as well? I think it would be a great step in Chiff and Fipple history, and make it easier for those of us beginning to share thoughts here, rather than having to try and go through a list-serve or some other icky board on another site.
Just a thought for the masses.
Wish I could post a poll:
*Who plays uilleanns?
*Who would like to play uilleanns?
*Who would like more info from players of uilleans?
This is what I mean. If enough of us play or are at least interested…would a board linked to C&F be warranted? Dale what are your thoughts? The thing I like about this forum, is it is so ORGANIZED and EASY TO USE!!! It just seems to be a perfect match to me. Especialy since so many uilleann pipers also play whistle.
I am very interested in playing them but even a practice set is out of my price range right now. I did get a low whistle to help me get used to the pipers grip for the day I can afford a set though.
In the world of whistles, some people are happy with their cheap whistles and others prefer their expensive ones. I’m never without my Sweetone.
There’s a champion for “cheap uilleann pipes” and his name is David Daye. He created what he calls a Pennychanter, which is a usable uilleann chanter made out of brass and PVC tubing. You can make them yourself from his drawings or he’ll sell you either a kit or an assembled chanter. He also sells kits for the bag and bellows, to complete a practice set. My set is due in about a month (I hope!)
I certainly would be interested in a uilleann board, especially if it’s anywhere near as active as C&F! I currently have a David Daye practice set that I am learning on and hope to soon add drones.
For anyone trying to practice the fingering without a chanter, a Bb whistle is very close to the same size holes and spacing. Just remember that on a chanter the lower hand has an extra hole to cover with the pinky finger (not that I’m suggesting drilling a hole in your Bb whistle).

I also would second a board on uilleann pipes. There are mailing lists on the net, but a C&F board with all you great people out there would be wonderful. By the way, I took up the pipes years before I bought my second whistle. Thank god there isn’t such a thing as UPOA… wait, am I not waiting for delivery of my B chanter? And maybe some time a half set in C sharp…?
Christian
I also play the pipes. Or at least try to.
Are there any experienced pipers in C&F community?
Message board for uillean pipes would be great but is there anyone who really could give some pro advice. Of course if the board is set up there will be. And what I’m trying to say… In my piping I could really use some friendly advice since I have no teacher.
Message board for UP would be just great.
I would really like to get more info on uileann pipes and think a seperate forum is a great idea. Are there other sites out there that have info on the pipes?
Gerry
BTW Really nice message board - much better than the last one!
I play uilleanns… have a David Quinn chanter, an Angus narrow bore chanter and a Lynch half set. I also have a 1/2 set from Seth Gallagher in C coming this summer. There is a VERY active uilleann piping board if you wish to join. It’s at uilleann@listserve.heanet.ie

Henri,
I just bought the leather bag kit from David Daye as a stronger replacement for the vinyl bag with the hope of eventually adding the drones to it. As of this time I have not yet determined where to obtain the drones, but I thought the leather bag would be a good start, as it is much more durable to accept a drone stock. I had thought of possibly a Lambe made set of drones. I also may get a Childress or Lambe half set and end up using the Daye chanter as a backup, a great backup by the way and almost a shame to use it as such! WhOA!
It’s on the books for me as soon as I can afford a reasonable half-set. I want to buy one set and keep it rather than upgrading. My wife’s carpeting has top priority before I even say too much about my interest, though I have tested the waters. (Not too chilly.) In 2 years, my son graduates from a private high school and both our cars will be paid off. And I’ve found my ideal whistles, so I’m done buying those, except for the O’Riordans I ordered 18mos ago.
I have to second Dave’s suggestion. The uilleann list is very active and very informative. The membership includes makers, teachers, seasoned players, novices… you name it. I’m fortunate enough to be in Seattle, which is home to the Irish Piper’s Club and a great support network. But, if I weren’t I’d take the list as a good plan B.
