I’ll start with that I have a David Daye pennychanter and have been playing (seriously that is) since I started lessons in March. I am currently up to 7 tunes that I can play fairly well on the pipes with some ornamentation. It has actually helped me to become a better whistle player as well. Soon, I hope to buy a “real” half set made by either Childress or Lambe. I would be interested to hear from others making the transition from whistle to pipes as well. Anyhow, on to a question…
Has anyone out there had the experience of adding drones to a David Daye practice set?
Well, I was back in Gardner Mass. just three weeks ago, and I paid a visit to dear Mr. Childress. VERY nice man. He even let me play his own personal set, which I must say was VERY impressive! Although I sounded absolutelt horrible, he was very kind, and encouraging.
I hear from other experienced pipers that his work is ‘good’ for the money, and his lead times are growing longer. You may also wish to consider Seth Gallagher in New York. He comes VERY well reccommended.
Yes adding drones to a daye set just makes it all the better… You could’nt go wrong with that… You can hear soundbytes of David’s drones on his site @ www.daye1.com :adminok:
Well, let’s see…
In four years D Daye has finally added drones to his sets. Never did hear if anyone ever tried adding their own drones to his sets.
Eugene Lambe, I believe, has stopped making pipes.
Meanwhile, I have long since moved on to a Gallagher half set looking to expand to a 3/4 set before too long, and my tune list has expanded to about 40 tunes. Back then I was a rank beginner, now I consider myself a rank intermediate player.
