Blue Marble Earth from Suomi NPP

Hey look, I can see my house! And the weather looks pretty nice.

Oh look, it’s America (again). :smiling_imp:

Is there a dark side of the Earth? :poke:

What always strikes me at this distance is that humanity’s estimation of its own presence is greatly exaggerated. In fact, I see only one feature in this entire view that’s directly attributable to humans, and that feature itself was a mistake.

What’s that big crack in the earth’s surface to the east of your house?

Don’t know. But I have my woolen undies ready as we head toward Alaska.

Indeed. 'Tis Los Estados Unidos Méxicanos.
(and its northern frontiers.)

MT…help me out. What is the human-influenced feature? I am no interpreter of satellite imagery, atmospheric trends, or water conditions.

I can see more than a few man made water features, very large bodies of still water in the middle of deserts, it’s unnatural.

Hmm. The marks of a forest fire? There’s more to be seen on the 8000 pixel version. I can pick out a few cities. And if you wanna be fussy, anything that’s not forest or lake between the Atlantic seaboard and the Mississippi, from the gulf to the top of the great lakes is man made.

Well the one I’m thinking of, visible in the lo-res version, is the one in my own backyard.

Ooooooh! What planet’s that, Denny? :smiling_imp:

It’s easy to see the Imperial Valley, south and west of Lake Mead. If you know where to look there’s Lake Powell and Elephant Butte, not to mention the impoundments in Oklahoma and Texas to boot.

one with storms?

One without Yurp.

I’m wondering about the four grey meridion-line streaks. Anyone know?

It’s where you’re seeing double.

I thought they might be the beachball seams inexpertly photoshopped.
