I am just considering a Phil Bleazey high D, I also like the key of C, so just wondered if anyone had any experience of the Bleazey high C and D, primarily the volume compared to say Copelands in C and D, I’m not too worried about what I have read on the upper octave push and the relatively high back pressure, as this is workable with breath control.
so if you have any info on volume, I only use the Copelands as a comparison because I have a C on loan for a day or so and its quite
loud up the top end and does tend to hit a certain frequency that causes my ears to ring a bit.
I have a blackwood high D by Phil Bleazey. The whistle is really on the loud side and very tricky regarding breath control. Not an easy whistle, but it rewards you with great playability and tone after you got the hang of it. The upper end is difficult to control - it’s possible to play the high end very mellow, but it’s not easy.
I mainly use it for sessions, it’s too loud for practise (and dangerous for the ears!).
I have both a Copeland C (nickel) and Bleazey C (in Mopani). I need my whistles to be loud for use in the band I play in and also worship teams at my church. When I play the two whistles side by side they both seem about the same loudness according to my subjective ear. They both have a pure tone, which I like, but I would the describe the Bleazey as a thicker more woody sound and the Copeland as maybe a bit more pure. Maybe it has to do with fewer overtones - I don’t really know the correct technical terms for this. When it has come down to actually performing and having to make the choice I find myself almost always going to the Bleazey. I am finding that I really like playing wooden whistles - my 2 most recent acquisitions were a Busman Eb in pink ivory and just got a Blezey low G in blackwood that plays like butter.
I had a Bleazey olive wood D. The top notes were too loud for me so I traded it. It was a nice whistle apart from the top end. I’d like to try a Bleazey in a lower key
big help as always, I have found quite a bit on the net regarding the Bleazeys, so the extra help from the forum will help me to decide,
I wasn’t really worried about very loud more concerned with any degree
of shrillness, I know this is probably more associated with alloy/metal whistle and I did find a degree of ringing in my susato high D, which is a loud whistle, but great for chucking in a bag and not worrying about damageing it, a little breath gymnastic does appeal as this is what makes
me work harder at knocking out a good tune.
