Wow Jessie!

If you want to hear a one of these played with an Irish Flair by former members of the Bothy Band check out NightNoise the song titled “A Different Shore”
It’s beautiful!
I know conditions aren’t the best at a trade fair, but would you be willing to give a quick review? Easy/hard to fill? Tone quality? Responsiveness? I’ve often wondered what it would be like to play one. (Could you imagine trying to hold one of those up during a 3 hour session?) ![]()
I found it very easy to play (weight aside). Just as a regular flute is easier to play (in terms of embouchure) than a piccolo, this was that much easier than a regular flute. Really, my lips were in a very loose embouchure (aperture?), and it didn’t seem to take noticeably too much air. The tone was very nice (one octave lower than a regualr flute) and rich. It was quieter than a higher flute. The flute was physically well-balanced and I enjoyed it.

Just the kind of flute I wouldn’t mind having with me if I had to walk down a dark alley. ![]()
A friend of mine went to China and saw a bamboo flute that was 3 meters long and required 3 people to play! I have also seen a Chinese bamboo flute that is about 1.5 meters long and playable by one.
Well, havent you seen this guy Erik who makes and sells ‘Giant flutes’ - have no idea wether they are really useable for music, but…

Eivind

Check out these flutes:
The picture of Eric with the big flute, I wonder if someone is holding it up on the other end.
I wonder if they have a Workmens Comp code for bass flute players falling over from the weight . Maybe they could tie helium balloons on the other side of the flute.
I got a video from Eric when I bought my bamboo sax from him. He actually plays his giant flute in the video. He will sell you one!!!
Craig
(Is that a pennywhistle in yer pocket or are ya just glad to see me?)
Now all of these posts and photos are the coolest thing to hit this board in months.
Since I’m in China, maybe I can find some of these big flutes to sell you guys. Outrageous.
I’m going to take Pat Olwell on a tour this summer of bamboo groves in Jiangsu province to find some long node bamboo…just maybe he’ll be ready to make that low low low Bb flute we’re all looking for.
