Bernard ("Barney") Delaney's Taylor Set

A friend of mine just got back from Clonakilty, West Cork, Ireland where he was playing guitar in a nice little pub called De Barras. He happened to mention that a set of Uilleann Pipes were in a glass case on the wall of this pub. There is a plaque next to the case that states the pipes were made by William Taylor, Philadelphia and were owned and played by Bernard (“Barney”) Delaney (Great staccato Piper) who was a native of Tullamore in Co. Meath. Here is a picture of the set on the De Barras website (upper left).

It is always a shame when pipes get locked away in glass cases.

I suggest he gives them to a pipemaker and puts some Geoffrey pipes in the case.

According to Chief O’Neill, Barney Delaney played a chanter made by James Carbray, originally from Quebec City but later of Chicago, in preference to the Taylor chanter.

The pub was owned by Noel Redding of the Jimi Hendrix experience,up until he passed away awhile ago.Loads of Hendrix memorabilia on the walls as well as great heavy electric blues sessions !!

RORY

It’s not a Taylor set.

Probably Anderson or maybe Brennan.

As for Barney Delaneys pipes, they’re in Chicago and sounding good too!

Tommy

“The pub was owned by Noel Redding of the Jimi Hendrix experience”.

It looks like there’s an LP copy of Paddy Keenan’s “Poirt An Phiobaire” hanging to the right over the set. Didn’t Donal Lunny once describe Paddy as "the Jimi Hendrix of the pipes”

Finbar Furey, rather?

Could it be possible that Bernard Delaney had two sets?

O’Neill mentions that he also owned an Egan set.

Paddy K was the recipient of the “Jimi Hendrix” kudos from Donal.

Yeah, but as anyone who ever saw Thomas Standeven play a C natural in a slow air knows, Thomas was the real Jimi Hendrix of the pipes.
