I sent ROSE off to the flute medic Dr. Jon C. and he performed operations to strengthen her weak joints, removed her old bandages and even gave her a more regal crown.
Behold Excalibur Mk II (…or should it be Olwell Improved ? )
This is Jon’s picture, taken while the rings were fresh, they have already started to yellow/darken and are even more attractive now.
It is hard to descibe flute tones and playing characteristics. But I’ll give her a go!
The tone is brighter than my Jon C. Rudall and the intonation is not quite as good.
But, McGee has a statement to the effect of (can’t find original statement): “A good Irish flute is one that doesn’t come between you and the music.” I think this statement is especially suited to ROSE. She is so responsive, she allows me to play better and more nuanced than I ever have before. The only other flute I’ve played that seemed to flow and respond as well was a McGee GLP. She requires a fairly specific embouchure, but still has a broad tonal palette. Despite being a Rudall Nicholson model, she is also capable of more volume than any other flute I’ve ever played (She can be played so loudly that it really hurts my ears. As opposed to everyone elses ears whom I usuall inflict pain upon. )
Yep, I’d say that pretty well describes my experience with a similar flute. When I first got it I thought, “Wow, Olwells really are as good as everyone says!”
I love my boxwood Olwell that has a slide, but there’s something special about the old all-rosewood one – it somehow feels more alive. It’s as though the absence of metal allows more of the music to reach your hands or something. It may very well be that it’s just lighter, though.
That’s beautiful. I love rosewood- the look and weight of it and of course the sound. My first wooden flute was a Sweetheart rosewood and it just felt good in my hands. I could feel the hum in my fingertips when I played it just right. With so many folks wanting either blackwood or boxwood, rosewood doesn’t get enough credit If I’d only been home 5 minutes earlier that day to put in a bid…
