I am always playing various whistles in the dorm. I guess some of it seemed to have rubbed off because last week a guy down the hall wants to learn to play. I ordered him a acorn. He has been playing for a few days and is getting really discouraged over his inability to play the second line in the Swallowtail jig. Is that an ok song for beginners. His fingers seem to be tripping over it. I never played that song till way after I had started playing. Do you all have any suggestions for him as far as that song, and what are some good beginner songs that are not too easy but will build confidence.
I’d try something slower such as Minstrel Boy, The Ashgrove, etc. Pull up the Sessioneer website and look at some slow airs.

Thanks I will try him on some airs. I think he thouight he was going to pick it up and start playing along with the corrs. lol
Blackthorn Stick almost plays itself. It’d be a good one for a beginner.
Under the heading of reasonably slow and approachable tunes that you might include The Wagoner’s Lad, The Parting Glass, Raglan Road, Spancil Hill, and Buchaill an Eirne, to name a few. These were among the first tunes I recall playing that actually sounded something like ‘Irish Music.’
Tom D.
Some of the tunes I’ve started with as a beginner…not necessarily ITM, but they are relatively slow, give you a chance to learn where to put your fingers and are good to listen to.
Cockles and Mussels
Amazing Grace
Lord of the Dance (from a hymnal)
The Spinning Wheel
Southwind
The Lady’s Pleasure
Down by the Sally Gardens
Munster’s Cloak

How about Dawning of the Day or Roddy McCauley. Those were my first tunes.
