Beginners Book

I’ve been playing for a short while and now feel that I need to do some study. What’s a good book for a beginner? I can read music and count beats(sometimes).

Thanks, Walt

What kind of music do you want to play, Walt?

Two good books for beginners I have & use are:

The Clarke Tin Whistle tutor - Bill Ochs, (various traditional tunes, Irish, Scottish, English & American)

and

110 Ireland’s Best Whistle Tunes, published by Waltons

Both have an accompanying CD or tape available, which is VITAL, and can be found at (among other good sources)

http://www.hobgoblin.com/local/bookfram.htm

I’m just learning to play so any type of music will do.Probably traditional. I’ve heard what I might call “jazz” on the whistle. I like it alot, bet I’ll have to wait.

I’ll check those sources.

Thanks, Walt

As a relative newcomer to whistles I wholeheartedly reccomend Bill Och’s book “The Clarke Tin Whistle Tutor”. It progresses quite slowly (which is good IMO) and it has a good selection of tunes (Irish, Scottish, English, and American) and teaches the barebones basics of reading music. Of course, you don’t need a “Clarke” whistle to use it - any whistle in D will work fine.

I would not reccomend “Step One: Teach Yourself Pennywhistle” because IMO it progresses much too quickly and tends to leave out important information.

Best of luck!
