Anybody out there have reed dimensions for a Bayley concert chanter? I did a search and didn’t come up with anything. Thanks for any info that you have.
Why not try asking Chris? ![]()
Staple 4.2mm ID cylindrical 50mm long
Head 11.5mm wide and 27mm to 28mm long
Finished reed 77/78mm long
I use a slip 120mm long
Reed prior to scraping is 83mm overall
21/23mm diameter cane and 76mm diameter roller for sanding

Sorry to break in like this ![]()
Chris, will you check you PM’s please? Been trying to contact you with no luck.
All the best
Morten
Thanks Chris and Mike!
I guess it’s time to sharpen up the old guouge.
I am having my bagpipeworld website as well as new one dedicated to the UP’s and Pastorals and this latter will have a full section on reedmaking for my pipes
Morten - have sent you an email. Need to chack the ISP web based spam box more often
Chris
11.5mm is very narrow for concert pitch. Do you think the head width affects tone. I have found that if I can make the head wide as possible and keep the back D up in pitch, that the tone of the reed is alot sweeter.

First of all, as I understand it Chris’ design does not have a typical Rowsome-derived bore. The best head width will depend on the chanter design.
Secondly, Benedict Koehler, whom I hope we agree is no slouch, also prefers a relatively narrow reed head for Rowsome chanters and his own chanters - 12.3mm finished width IIRC. I rarely go over 12.7mm myself, and consider that the narrower reeds give what I call a “sweeter tone” - so this last quality seems to be somewhat subjective.
Bill
Taylor chanters were designed to be quite loud, so Bill is quite correct in his feeling that a narrower head ameliorates the volume and produces a sweeter, more mellow tone. There is a limit below which one should not go and, in the case of Chris’ bore design, this is 11.5mm head width.
For the copy of the Bill Ochs Taylor chanter (normal bell, narrower throat) I am currently messing around with I am presently at 11.3mm head width. I do not think I can reduce the head width more than 0.1/0.2mm without seriously compromising stability, but we will see.
Even one or two tenths of a millimetre can make a big in a reed so an 11.5mm head width compared to BK’s 12.3 is a big decrease, but obviously it suits the design Chris uses.
I tried making narrow reeds after watching Bk on the DVD, the reeds played OK but I wasn’t keen on the tone. I was also interested in the fact that the famous reed that’s in LiamO’Flynns rowsome is nearly 15mm wide and I really like the tone of that chanter. I had a go at making reeds as wide as I could that would play in tune. The tone the wider reed produced I found to be more to my liking .
Any other reed makers have an opinion on how reed head width affects tone on Rowsome bores ?
