I’d really appreciate a chance to get together with any of you in my area and just talk flutes in general.
As a newbie, I’d really appreciate the chance to look at and play a “pro” wood flute and just ask some questions about flutes in general (keys and fingerings and what I should be looking for when I buy my first wood flute).
Will, I’m afraid I’m not that close to you (Wrexham, N.E.Wales), but if you’re ever up this way (Cheshire/Shropshire on the English side) do get in touch. I do occasionally go down to a session in Hereford (The Volunteer, alternate Wednesdays) and that trip takes me virtually past Chris Wilkes’ front door (near Leominster). Last time I went (November) I dragged Chris along with me. There is at least one regular fluter at the Volunteer sesh - a lady with an early Wilkes flute. I have a fiddler friend living near Ross-on-Wye who goes to various sessions in the Forest of Dean/Monmouth area, but I don’t have details on those. There are also sessions, maybe more English trad music orientated, in the Gloucester/Cheltenham area. I realise that none of that is really handy for you, though. Sorry not to be more helpful.
I live just north of Bristol and play mainly at the Hibernia Centre in Avonmouth, which you might like to attend. Do a search for “Hibernia centre” and “Avonmouth” and you should find the website (my memory fails me!).
