Archive recordings

I don’t think the people of the library are going to thank me for this but some of you may be interested in a little known collection of field recordings held in the Southern Folklife collection in the Library of the university of North Carolina. A man called Chris Delaney visited Ireland and Scotland in 1972 and recorded a number of good players, mostly in their homes. While I wouldn’t say he in general brought the best out in the players he recorded, some of material is quite worth a listen. Whistle-wise there is some Willie Clancy which is half decent, some very nice playing from Ann Sheehy from Co. Kerry (she is now married to fiddler Nicky McAuliffe and a highly respected music teacher, as these things go, when I told her about it, which isn’she had no recollection of this recording, let alone aware that it was available to the public) and some Micho Russell which isn’t among his best either. Also fiddling from Junior Crehan, Paddy Canny, Paddy Fahy and Peter O Loughlin, John Kelly , Denis Murphy and very tender aged Paddy Glackin, and James Kelly among others.
The catalogue of the library can be accessed via the web and they do take orders for copies. Good luck.
