Any Idea what this is

I was told it was a bagpipe part

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

its made by John Gray and son; London

looks loke some kind of keyless oboe.

thats kinda what I was thinking , Thanks for the info

Sorry, I know I’ve seen this before, but can’t remember where.

Looks like a musette, a folk oboe, used in France. Some were made in England. You can reed it with an oboe reed by cutting the bottom 1/3 of the staple off and sanding the cork down to fit. Sometimes pitched in F.

Are you sure its called a musette? A musette is usually the name for a French, bellows-blown bagpipe (precursor to all others).

Actually djm you are probably thinking of things like th Musette du Cour which is a bellows blown bagpipe but Musette by itself is a French Oboe. I say it I was thinking it could be a bombard and be worth some thing…

It could be a Spainish Dulzanian (not to be confused with the early Bassoon they are two different things) but those usually have keys.

I did a search on John Gray & Son all I couldn’t really find anything about whatever this is but John Gray & Son was an Organ Making firm in the late 1800s.

Whatever it is its on ebay under the bagpipe section???

I saw it on ebay earlier today then I came over here and saw this thread. I might have to get it just for fun. It definatley is not part of a Bagpipe because if you notice the top has not play for a hemp wraping so either it is broken or some type of an oboe. I vote it is an Oboe and the bell looks exactly like an Oboe bell.

I also vote Musette.

Here is a Musette Bechonet. Could it be a chanter to one of these? This one has keys, though.

Just for information: bagpipe in french is cornemuse (I believe that is the correct spelling).

Best is still the german: dudelsack… heh heh…

Ha! Let me add to the confusion, then. I have seen the term cornemuse used for both the mouth-blown and the bag-blown version of a chanter. The only thing that was common between the two versions was that the bottom of the chanter curved outward.

Uninformed opinions aside, it IS a musette. I have one that is almost identical. It is not a bagpipe part, nor is it a bombarde.

Ted

what kind of reed do you put in that thing, is the fingering the same as a penny whistle

The price has gone up quite a bit guess I will not be snipping for it.

Aw, it looks kinda cute  (I am officially a music geek…)

I played an odd sort of oboe once that I was told was a musette, which didn’t look a whole lot like what’s pictured there… of course there could be various types, or I could have been playing something totally different. The… whatever… I played had a few keys, and looked to be slightly larger. Though still smaller than your standard oboe.

Whatever it is, I want one. :stuck_out_tongue:
