strange old bagpipe uilleann?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3748296458&ssPageName=MERC_BC_ReBay_Pr4_PcY_BID

It’s strange all right, but I’m not sure it’s old.

Looks like a/d/A/D drones to me. Without the chanter it’s anyone’s guess…

“Odd bagpipe found at an antique store”

It’s says “ODD” Carel.., not old.. ;p
Just like you.., oh no wait.., you are old too..

Few weeks eh? You’re going i assume?

It’s written OLD in the title RICK
but it is odd,
and I am very young
but older than you :boggle:
carel

  1. They are odd.

  2. They don’t appear to be “old” - unless one counts a mildew-infested bag cover as a barometer of age.

  3. Scottish smallpipes, anyone?

“I accept money orders only, and charge actual shipping once destination is known (no bogus “shipping and handling” charges).”

Interesting quote, which I seem to read quite often, with regard to piping related things, especially the “no bogus “shipping and handling” charges.”

Seems one guy sort of has numerous names selling lots of items.

Just an observation.

Scottish Border Pipes. They don’t look at all odd to me?

Hi

They look a lot like Scottis Smallpipes. They come in both 3 drone and 4 drone version. 4 drones are used if you have two chanters in different keys. I’m guessing that the set was orriginally a combination set, meaning that it was orriginally made with interchangeable chanters (like mine). The most common combination sets are those with an A or D chanter.

PS: I’m not sure who the makers of those pipes are.

I’m not too familiar with this instrument. Was/is it a common thing to style the drones after their larger cousin, the GHB? This is the first GHB style set of drones I have seen on this type of instrument.

It looks to me as if they are a set of ‘border’ or ‘reel’ pipe drones with switchable drones. If I don’t miss my guess, you can see the “switcher” in the middle of the main stock.

Cheers

Yep,common as dog shite.

Ah, no…Uilleam (sorry to burst your bubble ). The only thing that Scotts Smallpipes have in comomon with the GHB is the chanter. The two big drones (on an A chanter) are tuned to A, with the two small drones tuned to E. This creates a contstant chord being played. Unlike the GHB’s where every drone is tuned to A, this creates the affect of one constant note. Both types of drone setups do extreamly well (when tuned ).

PS: It’s normall for Scotts Smallpipes to be sold accompanied with both chanters (or one if it’s not a combination set); rather strange for it to be sold with just the drones, bag and bellows.

Test

Sorry to burst your bubble, L42B, but I would concur with Uilliam that they’re probably drones for Scottish Border Pipes…in which case, the design of the drones often does look a little bit like GHBs. Depends on the maker, though. Nigel Richard used to make his drones a bit like that (check out the pipes Fred Morrison plays in “Rob Roy”) but he doesn’t anymore. Odd that they have four drones, though. Perhaps one is pitched in D and the other in E?

My guess is that they’re just a cheapo set of border pipe drones and that somebody, either the maker or somebody else, plugged the stock into an uilleann pipe bag. A few uilleann pipe makers have screwed around with making other types of pipes, so who knows…

But more importantly, who cares?

I was talking about BORDER PIPES not small pipes

For anyone who has been trying to reach Richard Cook regarding this item, here is his email address:

Rcookpiper@aol.com

I tried sending him some emails through the ebay question form and he said he has replied to all of them. I have not received any of the replies, however. Ebay’s system is apparently faulty. This is not the first item that I have had this situation occur. I would suggest contacting him at the above address if you have any questions, or are waiting for replies via the Ebay system.

Steve

I think it is a Smallpipe with interchangable Chanters but the SSPs have only been around for 24 or so years so it really is anyones guess.

I belive I saw this set shortly after Richard got it years ago. It came with a Taylor-style UP chanter, which ended up being bought by Sean Folsom. Some of the drones appeared to come from a Pakistan made parlor pipe set and were adapted to this set. Never was a SSP or border pie.

Ted

I would tend to suspect this set isn’t anything real, anyway…apart from anything else, what use are cord beads on a Border Pipe? Every set of Border pipes I’ve seen where the maker takes his style off the GHB has beading and combing, not plainturning, and most commonly the drones are Aaa.

L42B, be careful when questioning Uilliam’s knowledge of these things, you can get bitten
