I have an interest in playing this style of music. Any instructional websites; books ; videos or CDs out there?
Thanks in advance,

Phizillip, I don’t play Indian classical, just a little folk music, but know people that do. PM me if you’d like to correspond on the topic.

Where can one get sheet music for that sort of thing? I think it’s very pretty myself, but don’t they use a different notation system?
Yes it seems very different.
Found this today, whew!

Should be quite an adventure.

I have three books with Indian music, but couldn’t find the little folk music book. One is a rhythm book. The only relavent one is:
Ragopedia Vol. 1 Exotic Scales of North India by Shiv Dayal and Ashwin Batish It is in western staff notation and the first section of the book is about ragas and playing them. Batish Publications 1316 Mission St. Santa Cruz Ca 95060

It’s fundamentally improvisational;
in classical Indian music, there are three
instruments, a melodic instrument,
a drone, and a drum (usually the tabla).
The melodic instrument is the voice
of Brahman, the Creator,
the drone is Vishnu, the
preserver, the drum is
Shiva, the destroyer.
Creation, preservation, and destruction
are the three principal forces in
nature, so that the music is
the song of nature, that is,
of Brahman, Vishnu and Shiva,
rolling on. This is perhaps
the most sublime music
on earth.
The melodic instrument introduces
a set of notes, which comprise
a raga. These notes are used
as the basis of the improvisation.
Usually the tabla comes in later,
and the music is largely an improvisational
duet between the melodic
instrument and the tabla.I think this is the most sophisticated
drumming in the world.
There is no harmony, because there
is just one melodic instrument,
except that the tabla
is tuned to a note. Best
Thanks Nancy and all. I did pickup a copy of Ragopedia V 1, quite a book. Batish has a website with more relevant information to choose from. Still searching for a teacher near here. Aoleian Music is now defunct. Although there was talk of it opening up again sometime in the future.
Went to the “Marpa House” in Boulder left a message for a teacher there.
Small steps…
Ah yes the holy trinity, Jim.
I’d like to do more of a fusion, such as Remember Shakti and Ancient Future.
Thanks again everyone.

Maybe you can go to India and
study there–especially flute.
I lived there for three years,
and played a lot of music,
but, much to my regret, never
studied. The South of India
is really nice.
Oh, would it were that simple. Really though, wasn’t the poverty and lack of sanitation unbareable. You can tell that I’m a real go with the flow traveler.
I’ve always wanted to go to Sri Lanka. However, the civil war 's been going on ever since I’ve been old enough to travel by my self. Jim did you ever make it down there?

After a while of living in extreme poverty and lack of running water, etc., one simply gets used to it. Then once you actually have a shower, a sink, a phone, etc., again, it’s like you’re in heaven with the simplest things most people take for granted.
I would LOVE to go to India.
