I don’t think I’m ever going to see a shredded truck re-tread by the roadside in the same way, again.
It took me a while…I thought those were wads of garden cloth, or discarded trash bags.
I think I might move to the other side of the road instead.
Ooh! Nice egret! Ya don’t want to be riding a mountian bike with nobby tires close to those guys during mating season that fer sure.
I’m a biker…
WOW!!!
self relocating speed bumps!!!
how cool is that!!!
-Wow! Looks like Sanibel Island or a similar place. If thats it watch out. We’ve seen gators in and out of Ding Darling Refuge turn, snap, hiss and prep for attack at slight irritation, and some are huge and can sprint as fast as a person. An eleven-footer killed a lady gardening in her backyard on Sanibel a few years ago and I’ve always wondered if it was the same one posing on our latest visit. Its not at all hard to see them as a living dinosaur.
-Corkscrew Swamp in Florida is a great place to gator watch from the safety of elevated platforms & boardwalks in draught years when the food chain congregates in the gator holes. Great birdwatching too, there and along the Florida gulf coast.

We don’t have those in the Northeast, but sometimes the Black Flies get nearly as large, and bite just as badly..
A few years ago I was listening to CBC radio, and a historian who’d found an archive of letters written during the depression by men from southern Ontario who were working on a make-work program building the transcanada highway across Northern Ontario along the north shore of Lake Superior. It’s a huge distance; people don’t realize it, but if you’re driving from coast to coast in Canada, something like a third or a quarter of the way is endless miles of northern Ontario bush.
Anyway, in one letter home a young man wrote “the mosquitos up here are so big, they can stand flat footed and bugger a moose!” The archivist read it out on live radio before the host or producer could react.
