We’ve got some webworms, and they are nasty, but that’s incredible! I’d really like to know the time frame those photos were taken in. I’m betting just a day or two. Phenominal!

Growing up in the early 80s in NY, I was always instructed to squash any gypsy moths that I saw, and shown what they looked like. This was always stressed as very important but it was never explained why.
Now I know why. Yikes. I’m glad they didn’t explain why when I was 4!
Easy enough to control, just grab them by the handful and squeeze. Although a good stick with couple of nails protruding from the end works well to destroy the webs. We hiked through PA and NY when the frass from the Gypsy Moth catipillars sounded like heavy rain on the leaves, nonstop, 24/7.

Beth, during Gypsy Moth outbreaks you could go outside and hear two distinct sounds. One was millions and millions of jaws crunching through leaves, and the other was a steady hiss of millions and millions of pellets of caterpillar dung raining down from the trees. It was truly awful.
Saw a longhorn beetle in Maine recently…should I have whacked it, or are there longhorns that are native?

Yeah, the gypsy moths were horrible. I haven’t heard of anything happening as it did in the 70’s, but I don’t live up there any more, so might not hear about it. I remember hearing about a freight train that got stuck because of so many caterpillars and carcasses on the tracks. I didn’t believe it. Until my aunt couldn’t get up her driveway for the same reason.
