Any advice for first wooden flute owner?

Hi everyone
Well thanks to this board I am now the proud owner of a lovely Copley blackwood, my first wooden flute. And not a moment too soon as last week Niall Keegan told me I’d outgrown the three-piece Dixon resin flute I’d started out on, so I’m happy as larry right now. But also concerned to make sure I look after this new stick properly. It’s been in transit for 6 weeks, but had been played in by the previous owner. So anyone have any advice on how much I should play it, and how to treat it good?

Ps - Niall if you read this forum, thanks for an excellent week at the fabulous Durham Folkworks Summer school!

Neil

It’s always best to follow the maker’s instructions. Dave Copley has care instructions on his website:

There’s probably an email link for him there, too; I’m sure he’d be glad to answer any questions you have.

Enjoy! Dave makes nice sticks, and you won’t outgrow it as you outgrew the Dixon.

Thanks for that - I’d forgotten how much effort these makers go to to help you look after their work! Having now spent a hour mired in the ‘oil debate’ that seems to have raged here on and off, I’m going to stick to the makers advice (and hopefully not to the flute  ) and use commercial instrument bore oil. And of course keep and eye on the humidity, temperature etc.

Thanks again.

Congrats Niel!

Few things in this world are more wonderful than a Copley.

Doc
