Hello to all! I started 6 months ago and am hooked! I’ve have been looking at the site for a month or so, nice to have a community of like-interests. I have 5 whistles so far: the feadog beginner D, susato C, generation Bb, Burke D, and Burke low G. The last two I fenangled ( sp?) for xmas and birthday. Next is a low A for all those haunting tunes I love so well. Any suggestions?
I have a Dixon A, which is alright, but it doesn’t see much use. I usually break out the low D in those situations.
WhOA is Whistle Obsessive Acquisition, which is a condition which occurs whenever you hear a tune in an odd key and you just have to get a whistle which plays in that key, or you hear an unusual-sounding whistle whose sound you just have to try and copy.
If this happens, don’t fight it! Just go with the flow!
Welcome. I’m a beginner, too, but I have a Hoover Whitecap aluminum A that I like a lot. It’s easy to play, and I like the sound. (Of all the descriptions of whistle tone that I’ve seen here, “husky” seems the closest.)
So, how do you like the Burke low G, and is it aluminum or composite? I have a Burke narrow bore aluminum high D (#DAN), which I love, and a Brass Pro Wide Bore C (#CAB) which is okay, but not as interesting as the D. Since the C differs from the D in pitch, material, and bore, I don’t know if the difference in timbre is due more to one of those factors than to the others.
What does your username refer to? Seems like the Family name format of nomenclature of many flowers I’ve studied. Maybe that format gets used for all families of life, not sure. Like Rosaceae or Asteraceae.
And if so, how on earth do you pronounce the “aceae” part?
Aceae is infact botany nomenclature for the Family level. I was taught " ay- see-ee", but I have heard " ay-see-ay" . Its Latin, so the pronunciation is up for grabs. And yes I have done some botany in my day.
As for my Low G burke: its really my first low whistle. Its gorgeous on the bottom and more breathy on the top. I do have to use a fair amount of breath, but not as much as that Bb generation I have. I just find playing Burkes a wonderful luxury.
