Animals, Dangit

Even played very softly, an Olwell F bamboo flute can – and will – plunge barnyard roosters into a veritable Greek chorus of crowing at 2:30 a.m. :astonished:

Mubu the Cat, who seems to love Irish music and finally now approves of my flute playing, has a particular fondness for the album “Kitty Lie Over” by Mick O’Brien and Caoimhin O Raghallaigh (sp?). I think that those flat sets in B and Bb along with the tuned-down fiddle might be close to feline vocal ranges, hence her affectionate snugglings when I play it. Maybe it’s just good taste on her part.

My parrot,Jr.,dances to jigs and hornpipes. She bobs up and down, and side-steps left and right. My family all think it’s hillarious, and always whistle a tune to her when they come in my room.

One of my friend’s greyhounds likes to “sing” along whenever she plays.

It’s really starting to p#ss her off, since it’s impossible to practice while her hounds are all singing. (If one starts, the others will jump in.)

Not the reason I quit playing Saxophone, but not an encouraging factor:

I was living on our family’s cattle ranch, and every time I practiced the cattle would line the fence nearest our house and join in. Have you ever heard a couple of dozen cattle attempting to harmonize? :boggle:

Omigosh, that’s what my neighbor’s cows were doing the other day! And then there are the dogs. One goes and hides, and the other lies on my feet with a look of utter forbearance. The cat disappears unless I get out the whistle, and then wanders the house yowling.

It’s a really, really good thing I live in the country.
