Amazing 360 degree photographs

Check out Andrea Pistolesi’s website with 360 degree photos of city squares. If you click on the name of each city, you’ll see many more photos from the same city. Keep in mind that what you’re seeing is not only what would be in front of you if you were standing there, but also what would be on your left and right and in back of you!

He rotates a camera on a tripod and takes 12 exposures in quick succession. “A computer program stitches the pictures together, slightly distoring each one to create a single image with a dozen points of view.”

There’s a short article and photos in the March issue of Smithsonian magazine. I don’t advise spending a lot of time trying to figure the photos out–I think (having spent some time doing it this morning) you could go nuts.

I don’t have QuickTime at work and can’t install it. Is Paul’s 360 just one photo that shows the entire 360 degrees at one time? That’s what Pistolesi’s are.

Whoa! That is sooo cool! It’s set up so that you move your curser and the room spins, just as if you were turning, looking up, etc. Very smoothly done… and the see-through dog is an interesting touch! SSorry you can’t see it Susan. It’s neat!

The static 360’s are very cool too!

I remember a painting I saw that was a photo-realistic view of what you would see lying down on the ground in the center of the street in a small town… really great stuff! Changes your perspective, quite literally1

Oh, is Paul’s the one of the pub with the well-known piper? I’ve actually seen that one and it’s very cool.

No, it’s a music room, foyer, kitchen, hall area, with the camera set to pivot all around, and somehow put together so that you can view it from any angle, form that one position. Very, very well done. I suspect the dog was at the food dish just long enough to register a bit but not to show up completely… it’s a nifty aspect of the whole. It looks like you could just bend down and pick up the pipes from the chair… beautiful place.
