CNN Europe broadcast a half-hour-long profile of Paul McCartney this morning, in which he was described as “the one known as the ‘cute’ Beatle”.
Although giving a fairly good overview of the Beatles’ rise to fame, the profile failed to mention George Martin, who was important to the talented lads’ musical development and introduced them to instruments they had not previously encountered.
Question for fipplophiles of all persuasions and especially Beatles triviologists: is that an ocarina on “Fool on the hill”? And if so, was it George Martin who introduced it?

I can’t answer if it was George Martin who introduced the sound, but I can tell you that it was not an ocarina. What it was was a mellotron which was “played” by either Paul or John - there seems to be some debate as to which of the two Beatles it was.
I’m 99.99% sure. I’m certain I read it in either a Beatles’ history or saw it on one of the many documentaries I’ve seen. Of course, not many things in life are 100%!!
If I’m wrong I’ll graciously eat my humble pie!!!
Tony, I just checked the booklet with The Beatles Anthology, and you are correct - it is Paul and he is playing a recorder! My apologies to you and also to Roger, who started this thread. Mea culpa.
Mad… See what it says about other instruments. I just listened to it with headphones. I hear what sounds like a wind instrument playing chords. This could be your mellotron.

Roger - I can’t believe this! Do you really need CNN to know that Paul is a cutie-pie, even at age 60?
Cute?-This is the man responsible for unleashing rubbish like the appallingly slushy ‘Ebony and Ivory’ onto the world- and that crap with ‘the frog chorus’ the song name escapes me at present. Bleuugh!

But he’s also responsible for “unleashing” one of the most recorded songs ever - ‘Yesterday’.
I seem to be plonking on all of the old rock threads today. I’m more of a John Lennon fan actually. As for the cuteness factor, I’ll let others decide.
