Can anyone tell me of their experience with an Alba Alto G whistle? I am wondering how easy they are to play and if they have any special quirks about them. I have a Chieftain Low D but would like a Low G at a good price and the Alba seems to be priced right. I think it might easier to play than the Low D. Thanks for any info.

I used to have an Alba Low D and it was very easy to play. I gave it to a young girl as a first low D.
I recently heard an Alba G at a session and it sounded good. And it cut through the mix easily.
I don’t think you could go wrong with one.

I’m late to this discussion, but I have an Alba low G. It is definitely easier to play than a D (and I think the holes are even easier to reach than other Gs I have), and I quite like the sound, which is very dirty/chiffy. The OXXOOO C Nat position (I know, I know – it’s a G whistle, you know what I mean) is just a little sharp (but not obnoxiously so), which in my experience is a quirk of Alba whistles that I haven’t experienced with any other maker. The second register is 30-50% louder and takes a fair amount of breath, but to my ear the tuning is well balanced. I think the Alba fipple plug is lovely and the whistle is solid without being heavy – one of my favorites.
