A true compliment

If I may venture an OP topic revival… The upshot would appear to be that despite the gratifyingly generous endorsement, the case remained closed. Wrong pub, perhaps? One where punters recognise instrument case genera/know their sh*te might be more auspicious? Dare I suggest, 'twas a case of the porterhouse blues?

What’s a fidlle?

Something you didlle on.

Perhaps Ben’s typo is a Dublin porter inspired misprint reflecting his Welsh heritage… “lle” being a word/element meaning “place, location” - though maybe it was more a case of didn’t-lle:wink: (Pronounce “lle” correctly and the bilingual word-play marginally improves.)

Ooooooooh. Like a Crwth, then.

I doubt he would… but wouldn’t presume to speak for him…

I prefer the non-serious answers  , but the truth is not porter-inspired, but blackberry-inspired. I like my blackberry, but it’s not the easiest thing to work forum-wise. I’m back home with a PC now, so no excuses.

You gotta bear in mind, Jem, that the vast majority of Irish people appear to actively hate “diddley-eye sh!te”, far preferring C&W and a strange sort of celtic metal, in that order. The latter is particularly upsetting, but there’s not a lot to be done about it. To most Irish people, it seems as if trad is associated with the past and with poverty, and they don’t want to know. (There also appears to be a certain racist element to the distaste felt by many as well, but I would suggest that we don’t go any further along that route. )

Anyway, just as most Irish people don’t seem to like trad, most pubs don’t encourage it either. Here’s a great example: I went to a pub which is on the same premises as a music shop because I was recommended to turn up there early Sunday evening. I turned up. Nothing appeared to be happening. So I said “Someone told me there was music here?” (in a questioning sort of way, you understand), to which the answer was “On a Sunday???!?! God, no!” Which I thought was apt.

Oh, and no, I don’t. Horrible whiney things.
